Chess

Just thuinking about the future a bit here.Is there any chess clubs in the HPP/Keauu/even Hilo areas? I'm a player (certainly far from a "top" one though)that loves the game.I coahced a K through 6 chess club for about six years in Bonney Lake, Wa. We held two tournametns-one was a K-6 state championship and we had well over 600 entrants. We had to have both events at Sumner High School because little old Bonney Lake Elementary was way too small.

Do any of the schools have clubs? There have been cases of schools that started chess clubs having their grade point averages go up.

It's just a great game no matter what level one plays at.

I tried a google search some time ago on chess in Hawaii and it wasn't a very fruitful search.

Thanks anyone for your comments on this.

Just got my 5 year old a set .... We've been 'playing' everyday and he has genuinely 'got me' a couple times already. The ultimate strategy game to get synapses firing ... Then he wants to balance it with wrestling and kung foo right after ..LOL.

Jon,

I agree with you my grandson who is nine and into chess back in California has excelled with his everyday school work. My daughter who is a elementary school teacher attributes it to his chess playing. He hasn’t come into his big growth pattern yet but has the mind of an engineer. He has challenged the “big guys” to a game and then proceeds to wax their butts. When it’s all over they become great friends the big of body and the big of minds.

When you come to live here contact me I know lots of people in the educational system and what you suggest is something that they should look into.

Bonney Lake and Sumner! Haven't heard those names in a long time. You'll have to get one of those "Where the hell is" T shirts with Bonney Lake on it when you move over! lol

That's funny. I did sometimes have the younger kids in the club want to go play tag! It's a great game to teach your kids.(chess that is!).

Thanks, Lack.Sometimes, also, chess clubs lead to tournament play and getting active in the world of chess. That also may keep some kids out of getting in trouble. When I was in grade school in the 1960s there wasn't that much going on (no chess clubs). But after Bobby Fisher, things heated up considerably. In Wa. State there has been a huge amount of school chess clubs and tournaments almost every weekend for grade school, junuor high, and high scholl kids.

Lots of chess celbrities too. I played about six years at the National Open in Las Vegas and saw lots of grandmasters and world champions too (though I was only in the middle of the paqck of players). All those trips to Vegas and I never had time for gambling or catching a show.It was a grueling tournament schedule. As many as 1100 players at these tournaments.

Ha. Sumner is a very nice town.Bonney Lake!!I moved there in 1978 and stayed for 24 years. It's a great example of a town with a lack of planning.Just build wherever and whenever you want and we'll work out the details later.I was so glad to get out of there.

Jon,
Both the charter schools I've taught at here on the windward side have had lots of kids who played chess. In both cases there had been individual teachers who played and taught whoever wanted to learn, usually on their lunch "break". One of them was Waters of Life here in Puna, located in Kurtistown. The new director seems to have a ton of energy, and is really trying to help them overcome years of prior mismanagement. He would probably be open to reestablishing chess there, the teacher who started chess there has gone back to the mainland, but the same need is there.

I now teach at Connections in downtown Hilo, the elementary after school program would be the place to start there, if you were willing to travel to Hilo. There are often a lot of middle school kids lurking around after school too, who would love something to do. I would also check in with the parks and rec in Pahoa, I think there are after school programs like Boys and Girls club going in Pahoa too, the Pahoa schools would know exactly what is happening.

It was really fun watching these local kids apply their fierce competitive spirit to the strategy of chess.
