Hilo furniture store ?
#1
Hi again,
I have been really rewarded with help and suggestions and information from punaweb and just want to again thank all of you for taking the time to guide us through being new full-time residents here.

We need some furniture. We have gone on craigslist and been doing the yard sales.
Can anyone give us some suggestions of furniture stores in Hilo?
We need beds for sure. Also would love to know where some Asian style or bamboo or ratan type furniture was located nearby Hilo.
Any suggestions really appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

If you get used wood or wooden framed furniture make sure there is no evidence of termites, we brought home a chair that brought termites into my house.

There are actually better furniture choices on the Kona side (to furnish all those condos), and most places deliver to this side cheaply (or free if you get enough furniture) once a week. The Hilo furniture stores wanted to charge us up to $80 to deliver to HPP and the Kona stores were willing to deliver free. If you are furnishing a house ask for a deal if you buy all of it from one place.

You should check out Koehnen's on front street close to the Wailuku River in Hilo. Excellent furniture at very good prices. Check out Alice's attic for sale items. Again, you will not find furniture of this quality at these prices even on the mainland.

Check out Paradise Plants! It took us a while to even find out they carry beautiful furniture.

Termites, hard to spot early on, sometimes you can spot tell tale pin holes & 'lines' down the softer wood, some people tap the furniture, any furniture with coffee ground looking stuff anywhere most likely is termitted...

A very good investment is a termite policy on your house.... & tenting ~every 5 years.... termites will probably still make a house in your house, you are just knocking down the main infestation to keep the numbers down (as a queen termite ages, her fertility skyrockets!)

Also, teak is termite resistant, however powder post beetles love it....
and most wood is open to the big old carpenter bee.....
Have yet to find the "perfect" wood that no critter likes....this is why we are very cautious of wood... too many critters here LOVE it
but it is near impossible to have absolutely no wood in a house - even books get bookworms - first time I had ever seen them was in a book from the library here - always thought the were a joke!

To check for termites turn the furniture over and look at any exposed wood, there will be little tunnels where the termites go in and out. We didn't discover them until we moved the chair in our living room and there were little piles of frass (termite byproduct) on the floor.

I also would stay away from any leather furniture made in China. I got horrible contact dermatitis from a leather chair, it took 6 months and many visits to the dermatologist before my husband figured it out. After doing our research we discovered there was a bunch of Chinese made leather furniture that was treated improperly for mold and caused major health problems, including several deaths. I was lucky it was only welts, peeling, and deep lesions that left scars everywhere my shoulders and the back of my legs touched the chair.

We were really impressed with the service and furniture at Island Collections in Kona, they will make whatever you want to order and were willing to beef up the frame for bigger people. Free delivery to HPP too.

The best furniture store in the Hilo area I have found so far is a place named simply Bamboo & Teak Furniture at 180 Makaala Street, across from Nick's Garage and near HITCO. Kona has more selection but for Hilo this place has a wide range of pieces and the prices are not too outrageous.

There are a couple of antique shops in Hilo which carry furniture; the one located a half a block farther up the street from the Hilo Farmers Market has quite few nice old items in there.

Furniture coming in from overseas is supposed to be fumigated in the shipping containers to kill pests like bedbugs, termites, and so on. If I buy an item used (like, say, a cool old lamp) then I put it inside a huge black contractor trash bag, throw in a bunch of moth crystals, seal the item and crystals inside the bag, and let it sit in full sun for several days before unbagging, airing out, and bringing into the house. Between the heat of the sun cooking the contents and the fumes from the moth crystals so far I have not had any problems with bedbugs, termites, or other pestilential vermin coming in via Trojan horses such as used furniture and suchlike. I know this method at least works to kill cockroaches which were hiding inside objects because I have found their corpses in the bags. For big items sealing 'em in a shipping container (or any similar reasonably closed space) and letting them bake in the sun with a couple pounds of moth crystals seems to work equally well, at least so far.

Don't know what type of furniture you are looking to buy. But, costco carries mattress sets ... can get a pretty good deal if you got a pickup truck to haul it back in if you want to buy new. Also, sometimes they have coupons on them. They also carry other things like desks, chairs recliners. But you just got to catch it when it's in stock. Other wise garage sales are you best bet.

Good Luck.

We were mattress and bed shopping lately and found exactly what we were looking for at Kaloko Furniture (near Costco) over in Kona. The prices were great (they are willing to work with you) and the customer service is excellent. They deliver to the Hilo side for free if your order is over $1000. And, they do carry furniture for all the rooms in your house.
