Last Friday some kids were messing around a neighbors house & I called the police & also checked our street video (installed after our last Keystone cops episode) which had recorded the kids on the street & entering the house. The police arrived 35 minutes later (interesting side note, the responding cop went by the place 7 minutes after the call & 28 minutes prior to stopping), took down the info, requested that I make a copy of the video & gave me a case # and a phone # to call when I had the copy made. (second interesting side note, the officer wanted my birthdate for the report...)
I made the copy & called the phone #, they took the info along with my phone # & stated the officer would call me back....
Today I called again... the officer has been in, but probably too busy to call.... but when he could he would stop by & collect my jump drive as evidence....I explained that I would rather KEEP my jump drive, so could I take it to the Hilo HQ to have them download the info.... after some checking, it seemed very complicated & they would much rather take my jump drive as evidence....
Since I plan to be near the Kapiolani HQ, I just decided to call them to see if this would be possible... I was told that the ticket # I have is a miscellaneous ticket number & that there is no evidence collection for this type of ticket....
So.... the time copying the data, along with the time to make the calls was all wasted....
& what if I had just given up my jump drive to the officer? (assuming that he would have even bothered to take the time to pick it up... & from the previous Keystone cops, that probably would have been after midnight without calling first!)

Would be nice if Puna had a private security company to come when you call.
If you have been on this forum long enough you'll see these types of posts over and over. Cops are way too busy to go bust people ... There is no $ for what you want them to do.
In oregon if you get robbed, don't waste your time calling the cops, just call them and they will mail you a form so you can fill it out for your insurance claim! Seriously!
Why do you think we hand out FOOD stamps TO ANYONE that asks? It's cheaper to give out 400 dollars for food every month than to have a cop being called on a shoplifter. There are no resources and time in jail is a strain on the taxpayer and state not to mention the court systems are already overloaded.
As budgets get slashed and economy keeps going into the dump ... Don't expect it to get any better any time soon. Just have good neighbors willing to confront problems as they arise along with any limited support from law enforcement.
You could always burn your video to a CD/DVD and mail to the police station??? If it get's lost burn 10 of them and keep bugging them till something get's done? I would imagine that in the dark, there are no good shots of faces on the video? On a side note, you can buy 4 gig usb drives for like 5 bucks.

eric, If the police do not have the time to deal with this petty stuff, WHY DID THE OFFICER REQUEST ME TO TAKE A COPY OF THE VIDEO?
If there was no interest (IE, he wrote the miscellaneous case ticket) there should have been no request from the police officer for the video...that would have ended it...but instead, he asked for the copy, gave me a ticket # & a phone # to call when I had the copy made....
So the cops are too busy, but have no trouble asking you to waste your time doing something they have no interest in.... sounds like Keystone cops....
Added: it was at noon time & 2 of the brightest & best came back to my fence (& right in front of a camera bank) to request permission to go back & retrieve something from inside...so VERY excellent copy image...& I told the police officer this...
ADDED: HB - with the miscellaneous case ticket, there is no way to have evidence, so the upload would just be more of a waste of time (except for the parents of the 2 girls & 6 boys that were putting their clothes back on the way out!)

Setup an iREPORT account with cnn or foxnews (or both) and upload the video there.

The one time I needed to file a police report, I went in to the Keaau Police Station. The officer had difficulty completing the paperwork, he said he wasn't sure how to fill in each section. When he finished as best he could, he told me it would be forwarded to the Hilo Police Station. That took over a week. Hilo police held on to it for a month or so as an officer there reviewed it. Once they determined they had enough information to proceed, it was sent over to the Prosecuting Attorney. He returned it to a police detective at the Hilo station so they could interview the defendant. Afterward it was sent back to the Prosecuting Attorney. During all of this I called the prosecutor at least once every two weeks for an update. In the end, the defendant left the island, about 8 months after I filed the paperwork - - and one week before the prosecutor called to say he wanted to proceed.

I think the cops play "wagon train" too much. You see them in a caravan sometimes 3 or 4 or more cop vehicles traveling together, even for what appears basic traffic stops. So when you see them playing wagon train, that means the rest of puna isn't patroled.
