Does anyone know why the highway was back up going into Hilo from Keaau around 10:30AM. The car next to me said it was backed up all the way to town. I turned around. Have to go in tomorrow so would like to find out what the problem was.

The highways division was doing roadwork. It cleared up around noon when they broke for lunch but I saw the cars backing up again around 1:00.

Yes, they were painting new road markings. When I drove in this morning they were working just past the merge between the bypass and the highway and essentially four lanes of traffic were being funneled into one. Traffic was virtually at a standstill.

I can't believe they would paint such messed up lines on a brand new surface.

I think those are just the temporary lines they lay down until they get around to really messing up traffic while they take a whole lot more time to paint the permanent lines. I am so glad I go into work at 6, before they start working on that road.

My impression was they were doing the permanent lines today (lots of string laid out with stakes in straight lines etc) but I was there when the work had only just begun, so didn't see how it looked later on. It was so backed up at 8:45am, can't imagine how bad it was an hour or two later. Really think they have not planned this work very well and there were no warning signs of lane closures when I was there. At first I thought there had been a bad accident at the merge but when I finally got there it was because so much traffic was being merged into one lane.

Nothing amazes me any more when it comes to road work, road planning, or road matienance in Hilo District. Makes Arkansas look enlightened!

HDOT and CoC - well we know what they do to a wet dream.
No prep, no signage, no nothing.
A f*** Puna if I ever saw one.
In the future Punatics, be nice to HDOT whether deserve it
or not.
Yes this was HDOT's warning shot to Puna, re: 130 rebuild.
Kiss our ass or we will screw you.
Isn't that right Neil?
