I like Safeway and have every expectation that their new store will be even better. When their staff pass in the aisles, they almost always ask if you need help finding anything. When I do need help, they don't just tell me where to look, but they walk me to the exact product I am seeking. The place is clean, smells nice, and has become more competitive price-wise in the last year or so. Target and Safeway, next door to each other, sounds like retail nirvana to me, at least for Hilo.

I think Safeway's service has for the most part been great. I shop there often. I keep trying KTA and others and find myself returning to Safeway. Not sure I am completely looking forward though to more miles of aisles.

Kathy, I go to Cost-u-less just for the sourdough bread, they bring it in weekly from Mamane bakery in Kamuela. Friends have also tried their farmers bread and say that is excellent[

Oh I love Mamane bakery. I used to get their pastries when I
loved lived down the st from them in Honokaa (if same Mamane Bakery). Thanks for the tip!
Edited to add: That must have been a Freudian slip as I lived there with mark my first husband (who although crazier than a bedbug is and always will be incredibly sweet.)

Totally agree on that sourdough from Cost-U-Less. YUM!! I'd tell you my favorite deli bread at Malama/Foodland, but you'd buy it and there wouldn't be any left for me.

Anyone remember what the scheduled date is for the opening of the new Safeway store? And has a decision been made as to who is moving into safeways old location?
