There is an eighty five year old gentleman living in Pahoa Village that could use some friends. I understand he used to be a cook for John Wayne years ago. I'll bet you money he can tell you tales that can make you laugh and can make you cry.
He is sharp as a tack but physically frail. He could really use some people to visit him and maybe be willing to take him out somewhere once in a while.
He has survived all his family. No one left. He really needs and deserves more than a t.v. and radio.
If anyone wants to know more call me.

P.S. He needs a single bed too. All he has is a narrow cot. Its too low and he falls out of bed at night sometimes.

Rob- I'm on Oahu so can't visit, but am willing to fund the bed if someone local can help on the delivery / set up?

I can handle pick up and delivery but I don't know what a bed costs. Your offer is very kind.
Perhaps if anyone can donate a bed that would be nice. If anyone wants to donate any money for a bed I can take donations through
Punaweb's donate link too.
What's a bed cost?

Rob,
I worked with old folks for many years when I was at school and college, for some reason I seem to be able to connect with them - my whole family did! I can't offer anything regular due to my own schedule but if there's any way I can help I'd love to. I'd also be more than happy to donate some money for a bed. Perhaps you could drop me a line and we can talk about this offline?

I did some marine carpentry for John Wayne on his boat the 'Wild Goose' in Newport Harbor in the 70's. I wonder if I've met him before?

I'll call Terry at America's mattress and see what can be done. Smiths also could deliver a bed. Will check tomorrow and repost.
I'm not in Pahoa at the moment-- but will be in the next month. I'll definitely commit to an hour for an evening each week. Love to cook as well, so will feed him if he wants. =)

topograph,
The money is received. It it likely more than needed. Your concern and help to a stranger is impressive. I will return any unused funds.
