The Secret's out about Pahala's biofuel plant

I'm being rational. You can name two accidents (one with zero casualties) amongst the hundreds of nuclear reactors that have been running without problems for decades all over the world. Did you know that Japan alone has over 50 nuclear reactors?

"What about all the near misses we never hear about?"
How do we know they exist if we don't hear about them? Nuclear reactors have to be among the most closely-monitored installations in the world. Could it be that there are very few "near-misses"?

Whether Hawaii gets nuclear power is up to the people who live here and vote here. Choices should not be made based on irrational fear. Nuclear is just one option. I would prefer geothermal myself, but some people don't want to "disturb Pele".

If not mistaken, I believe that Greg and PaulW are making the point that an off-shore nuclear power plant - ship based - could be an effective means in which to provide cheap power to the island. Being ship based, it would be immune to earthquakes, lava, etc. The military has a superb record in operating these power plants.

Paul, the fear of nuclear power in Hawaii is not irrational. We live on an island that cannot be evacuated in the event of an emergency or breakdown. Our land is finite and once polluted with radiation will be unliveable for whatever the half life of the pollution were to be. What is it, 10,000 years? No one lives on Three Mile Island or near Chernobyl now nor will they for the foreseeable future. Many of us love this aina very deeply and car to protect it.
Just because there were no immediate deaths from those incidents doesn't mean that the radiation that the people were exposed to isn't affecting them now. Please post a link that shows that there was no human or animal radiation related illness.
Just because there are many nuclear plants operating safely, doesn't mean the potential for this kind of disaster doesn't exist. Wasn't a plant in NJ just shut down recently due to serious flaws found in its structure. We all know that cement fails. We are also very prone here to serious earthquakes and the obvious volcanic aspects of nature. If you think NIMBY is showing its face for a simple road, how do you think people would react to having cooling towers in their backyard? Believe me, it won't be coming here in your or my lifetime.

Sorry MDD,
I'm not at all a proponent of nuclear power. I merely pointed out that it already exists here, and is therefore open to discussion.

speaking of radiation casualties -

I had a dear friend die of radiation related illness - he was engineer who spent his military career in subic bay on sub cooling systems

not all radiation related deaths are caused by meltdowns - my guess is pin hole leaks are not reported............

Dugger, what happened to the millions of people (killing fields) after our pullout of the "bull****" war? Was that moral?
Reply
If you are talking about Pol Pot and Cambodia, that would have happened with or without us. Of course it wasn't moral. It was an atrocity. But we weren't officially in Cambodia. There was never any sanction for us to be there. As a matter of fact, there was no official sanction for us to be in Viet Nam.
Cambodia was not the only nor will it be the last killing field. How does the fact of Pol Pot relieve the lives of American boys and girls killed during Viet Nam and the lives of innocent Vietnamese. The atrocities committed by American soldiers are well documented in history. That war was a direct result of unrealistic Communist paranoia, specifically the Domino Theory which stated that if one country falls to Communism the next one will and so on until we are all Communists. It was also a war supported by American business interests that had nothing to do with our National security. Pretty much the same with every war since. WMDs, not. Oil, yes. Bush and Cheney familys got even richer on that one.

Many wars were not intended to be won. Many people understand this and chose not to participate. It's one thing to dupe and entice people (jobs, benefits) to go to war and kill. It's unethical to incarcerate those who refuse to participate. We've all now come to the conclusion that it's not too cool to force people to kill, so high incentives are given along with false fears. First it was communism, now it's terrorism. What's next? Seems as though the jobs available now are mainly military, security, police, TSA, and the likes. Really, I don't feel any safer when at the airport, forced to be groped and irradiated without due cause. Do you? Why do we put up with this sham and allow our liberties to be removed?

Sorry, getting off topic.

Oh, those reactors sit in the harbors all the time. Doesn't seem to have ever been any issues?

I WISH is could take credit for dugger's comments.
As you know, I am not articulate and often step on my own foot in this blog.

Why can't you just attack me for what I write on punaweb?

Once again you are stating that I am a "sock puppet". That is again your continuing lie about me.

The last time we went around about this you accused me of using other names and posting on another blog. THAT IS A LIE. I confronted you many times on that thread and you never apologized. I will state it again, I have NEVER posted on any other blog anywhere. This is the one and only blog I have ever posted on.

It didn't work to say I was posting on other blogs under other names, because it was a lie. ... So now you are saying I am posting on other names here. What kind of fantasy world do you live in?

Deal with me as who I am, one guy posting. I say enough to respond to as myself. Why make up that I am silverpenny and dugger? I am not.

This is rediculous. You could be posting under other names and maybe you are. I don't have the interest. Why would I do that? I don't hav a problem posting what I feel under my orchidlandguy.

You are posting under a made up id. Why is that ok and not ok for the rest of us.

Argue with me as who I post as, orchidlandguy.
Get off trying to tie me to anyone else.
Move on and stop playing with shadows. I will argue with you up front, as my one name orchidlandguy.
