For those who don't know there is a great organization devoted to keeping invasive species out of Hawaii as well as information on how to eradicate some that are here. There is even a great article about LFA.

I have confused on the mangrove - Seaweb.com has this to say positively about mangroves - but yet Malama O Puna is working so hard to eradicate them. Is it just our climate makes them proliferate out of control?

(My grade school friend is a big cheese with Sea Web so we were discussing this on her FB and I got attacked for saying "mangrove bad"... lol)

The issue with mangroves in Hawaii is that our native ecosystems did not evolve along with mangroves. So in most other tropical places mangroves are essential to healthy near shore ecosystems, but in Hawaii they are killers of the native near shore ecosystem.
A "weed" is a plant out of place, in Hawaii Mangroves are weeds, no matter how important and helpful they are in other places.
