Pahoa Hardware Bought by Ace Hardware
#1
I was in Pahoa Hardware this morning (Sun. 2/20) and the shelves were very empty. I thought they were going out of business and mentioned it to an employee who told me the company was bought by Ace Hardware and that they were going through an inventory change over.

Personally I liked the old Pahoa Hardware because 9 times out of 10 I could find what I needed and liked to support local business. I hope the new boss understands what we here in lower Puna need and stock their inventory accordingly. (i.e catchment supplies etc.)

As far as I know Ace does not buy anything. It is a franchise, each store is owned independently.

There may not be an influx of money from the sale.
Depends on the circumstances and reasons for the sale.

Plus, managing and paying for an inventory is tough in Hawaii generally, more so on the "neighbor islands", particularly Lana'i and Molokai because of their small populations and relative lack of money, and for the Big Island due to our size (4028 sq. mi.)and dispersed population.
Being in business and making, growing or selling a real and tangible product is tough.

PBC,

I need to ask the owner what she will do / her plans but I hope she will continue to re-invest in Puna. P.H. is an awesome store. Hope immediate improvement happens by elimintating the sometimes crabby check out clerks.

I have to say my experience is the opposite of Andrew's. I pretty much stopped going there and went on to Orchidland because 9 times out of 10 PH did not have what I needed--either because they did not stock what I wanted, it was out of stock or they only had one when I needed two. I wonder if this will impact the Keaau ace?

Ace's purchase of Pahoa Hardware will be a good thing for shoppers in that area. Ace has a much wider product offering than Pahoa Hardware because of economies of scale. Ace has more stores, move vendors and more clout for good deals from their suppliers simply because of their purchasing power. Ace will offer products never before seen at this location, along with rain checks, frequent shopper points, etc. This store will soon offer the same specials that keeps so many return customers coming back to Ace. I'm a hardware manufacturer/supplier rep for the Big Island. I work with the managers and buyers at Ace Hardware, HPM, True Value and others. I've shopped at Pahoa Hardware once and never went back because better deals and more selection were apparent else where. The size of this location may be limiting, but I firmly believe that Ace's purchase of Pahoa Hardware will be a benefit for consumers.

Can anyone confirm that PH is becoming an Ace Hardware franchise? I am doubtful.

I can't confirm anything but I saw one of the owners there a few days ago in serious discussion with guys in ties.
Assume the best and ask questions.
