Aloha. I am looking for some insight into how to deter a persistent thief.
Has anyone here ever found themselves repeatedly targeted and robbed?
This is a vacation rental, off grid, so certain sorts of wireless devices are not an option. At this point I am watching for my stuff on craigslist. Is there anywhere else I should be looking? Any ideas?

There are very real looking fake video surveillance cameras on eBay for something like five bucks. Some use batteries and have a little red indicator light. Most thieves aren't terribly smart.
Assume the best and ask questions.

I would try a motion-detecting game camera. It should use little to no power when there's nobody around.

You're both right: always install an obvious decoy camera with your well-hidden real camera(s). The decoy will scare a dumb thief, and can help convict a "smart" thief by making the "intent" really really obvious.

Fill a 2 gallon gas can with gas/sugar and leave it conveniently in your carport.

So the decoy is for the theif to disable/take while the real camera records the act?
