are there good swimming beaches in puna? I am a fairly strong swimmer who likes to swim daily for exercise and am thinking of buying a vacation home in Puna.

Makenzie has no beach, none, Zero. It is all sea clifs.

Kahena has a "Beach", as in sand, but it also rocky, totaly exposed with no reef whatsoever, and is best considered a intermediate to advanced place to swim. People do swim there regularly, though. When it is flat it can be nice. Gets very deep immediatly.

How many people are drowning at Kehena every year?
And no lifeguard, though I've seen 2 at the same time at the warm/kid pond.

Kapoho Tide Pools. Some of them are bigger than a olympic swimming pool. Lots of room to swim. No waves.

No "sand." But if you can swim, it's a beach to me.

Thank you for the information. Where is "secret beach." I read that it was near Kehena but it didn't mention swimming.

Well Puna side is not known for swimmer friendly beaches. Kehena and new Kaimu can be very dangerous depending on what currents are happening day to day. Which explains the fairly recent Kehena drowning of a local who you would think would know the beach. Even the rescuers on that drowning had to be rescued. The warm ponds at Ahalanui you can lap back/forth a bit. Biggest down side is water can be contaminated by bacteria and thieves like to grab car keys there. Issac Hale boat ramp area can be good depending on the waves coming in but def. watch the boats and be careful on the rocks.

There are some really sweet swimming areas in the Keaukaha area of Hilo, east of the harbor. Not far from Puna... but don't count on Puna for beaches or safe swimming. There is a public olympic sized pool in Pahoa Village.
Assume the best and ask questions.
