Walgreen's Opening
#1
As Bear and I were driving past the new Walgreen's in Hilo yesterday, we noticed a sign that said " now open." Had no idea and didn't stop, needing to get somewhere else. Today's Star-Advertiser says it will open Sunday, so maybe they are having a shake-down unpromoted stretch of business before the main event. In any case, here's the story:

Edited to add: For those who might not know, Walgreen's took over the former Borders Books location in front of WalMart.

On my twice yearly trips to Texas, I always visit Walgreen's to fill out my "care package" for home. I find it economical to only buy their loss-leader advertised specials. (They have really great deals in their weekly ads, but the everyday prices are not particularly competitive.) Despite this limitation, the specials are always quite extensive, and I invariably find some things that are real bargains. We'll soon see if it's like that here, too.

Competition can be a good thing for the customers. I notice the unadvertised specials at the Long's where Walgreen's sprang up close by. Of course you gotta go every week to capatilize. i think Walgreen's has more extensive pharmacy section.

Also Foodland advertised fired chicken special- 10 thighs and 10 drumstick for $13.99. The best fried chicken at the best price. Only when I go there they never have enough drumsticks. Sounds like one of those "loss leader" deals.
