I just came back from Hilo and as I was driving along Bayfront I smelled the stinkiest smell. It went on for several blocks and then no more. Anyone know what the you-know-what that was???

There is a raptured sewer line there, they are even talking about letting to raw sewage into Hilo Bay as a temporary solution.

The article I read said that if they had to release untreated effluent, it would be outside the breakwater. That does not necessarily mean that what Carrie smelled was something else, though.

There are these trees by the bus station that have super stinky flowers, they smell like a septic system back up, and the smell spreads for several blocks. A coworker who walked past these trees daily for years always wondered about this seasonal smell and finally asked someone working in the park why they didn't fix the sewage leak from the bus station. The guy pointed out the trees and said that was the source of the smell. She said it was a springtime bloom, right about now, so maybe that was the smell.
I can't imagine why someone would even think of planting such stinky trees, but someone did.
