Something Rotten In Hilo???
#1
I just came back from Hilo and as I was driving along Bayfront I smelled the stinkiest smell. It went on for several blocks and then no more. Anyone know what the you-know-what that was???

Thanks for the warning, Carrie!
Hope it's not the WHALE! (or parts thereof)

wonder if it is the sewer leak from the airport?[?]

There is a raptured sewer line there, they are even talking about letting to raw sewage into Hilo Bay as a temporary solution.

Appreciate the news update!
That sucks ... sewage in the bay. Merry Monarch almost here too. [Sad]

I thought that only happened on Oahu?

The article I read said that if they had to release untreated effluent, it would be outside the breakwater. That does not necessarily mean that what Carrie smelled was something else, though.

There are these trees by the bus station that have super stinky flowers, they smell like a septic system back up, and the smell spreads for several blocks. A coworker who walked past these trees daily for years always wondered about this seasonal smell and finally asked someone working in the park why they didn't fix the sewage leak from the bus station. The guy pointed out the trees and said that was the source of the smell. She said it was a springtime bloom, right about now, so maybe that was the smell.

I can't imagine why someone would even think of planting such stinky trees, but someone did.

Fun story, Carol. [Smile] Those must be the arborius pilau planted there. [Wink]

After reading your post, I went by there and rolled my windows down. No stink. Maybe too late in the day.

Talked to people in town about the sewage thing. Heard it was to be piped out to a 1/4 mile past the breakwater. Still ... (and that is not meant to be a news report, just what I heard at Island Naturals.)

All those trees with the huge canopy (similar in shape to royal poinciana) have flowers on them right now. Pinkish wispy flowers kind of like a silk tree. I'd like to know the name of the tree if anyone knows.

Last week, was stopped at the light on Pauahi /Bayfront intersection, and my car got swarmed with bees. Angry bees, lots and lots of bees. Lucky I had the windows up! This week, same stop, no bees, at least not in the road. I bet they are all over those big trees.
