Military Training Flights!
#1
O.K. this is #5 for today and awhile! [Wink]

For OVER a week - we have been putting up with nightly "Military Helicopter Training Flights" - a pair of them, over the ocean - flying from Hilo over Kaloli Point over the ocean along the coast to Kapoho Lighthouse area -turning around and heading back to Hilo - two or three loops a night. Always between 7pm and 9pm - every night, including the weekend. [Sad]

It is annoying! [}Smile]

Anybody know - what's up? [?]

I noticed them off the HPP coast for the past few days while jogging. Not so much annoyed as just curious.

We saw 4 helicopters flying in formation about 7 PM last night between here and KBL. Wondered what they were doing?

A friend in the National Guard says that those 'copters are based at the NG facility at Hilo airport and have been on training exercises involving formation flying and other pretty routine stuff. If we ever have a sudden natural disaster of some sort, we may find ourselves very happy to have well-trained helicopter lift capacity nearby. The National Guard has a long and commendable history of "errands of mercy," so a few days of bother seems like a small price to pay.

If they're going to do night-time training fights, is there a better time than 7pm-9pm? I think not.

O.K. - I too believe "he National Guard has a long and commendable history of "errands of mercy," and respect their training needs. Getting home at 8PM from a long day at work to the sound and sight of TWO helicopters buzzing my lanai - is unmerciful! A few days is one thing - over a week and a half including the weekend is excessive.

"If they're going to do night-time training fights, is there a better time than 7pm-9pm? I think not." Maybe because they are not buzzing your lanai.

What gives here - people are defending an UNUSUAL occurrence - in an area NEVER used as a "training area" before. This is not the "Pohakuloa Training Area" or Hilo bayfront with all forms of aircraft NORMALLY flying around - but the "idyllic" coastline of upper Puna (HPP/Kopho)!

Okay, I've emailed them asking if they'll please change it to 1am-3am.

P.S. PaulW since you have established a communications link - could you ask them to go away or just stop! [^]
