New Payday loans to open in Pahoa
#21
Maybe under the mirror "Cagary" could put his/her phone number and state that he/she endorses Payday loans and their shady practices.
I would then like to hear the phone messages "Cagary" would get after a month or two.

Many of these kinds of businesses exist only because of little or no regulation as to permissible interest rates. Re introduction and enforcement of the old fashioned usury laws would go a long way to mitigating these companies predatory practices.
The other side of the coin is that there would be far fewer companies willing to loan money if these laws were re enacted.
Bear in mind that so called 'legitimate' lenders such as banks charge outrageous interest on credit card balances to clients who have good or fair credit. Gouging is not restricted to the poor. Ideally the old adage 'never a lender nor a borrower be' is a maxim to live by. Easy credit has made paupers of many, as the housing bubble attests.
It would be good to require mandatory high school classes about credit and the use of debt as a pre requisite for graduation.

yes avoid these places like the plague. Another business to add to the list is rent-a-center ones... You could go out and carry signs in front of their establishment but that won't stop a tweeker that needs his daily fix.

Oh well.

Let's identify the two issues that have been raised by the presence of this new business:

1) Is it legal? Of course, it is.

2) Is it desirable? No, not in the least. This is a predatory business that is a signal of the demise of a town, city, or locality.

Who is going to fill this niche, if not this business? When I was a young and shorter on funds, I came up short on several occasions. I turned to family and friends --- never for more than $150. Nearly ever time, I paid it back.

Family and friends is what we need to be encouraging and supporting. These businesses encourage a cycle of dependence. Freedom of choice does not break this cycle. That's a libertarian fantasy.

Pahoa should regard this business as a pariah and treat it as such.

I do support payday loan businesses. This fantasy that some people have that every one has friends and/or family that is willing and able to help them out financially is ridiculous. Friends and family should always be the first option, but if for some reason they can't come through, why not have a business around that can help. Why take this option away?

People who use this service are not children, especially not your children. They are adults who are capable of making their own decisions. Who are you to tell them what they should or shouldn't do?

What other businesses do you not approve of?

I agree. If someone answers "yes", lets hope such a business exists for these people and there is a door they can open.

No one is taking this option away. The option is there. The presence of this option is, however, a bad omen for Pahoa, which is no longer an oddly charming Hawaiian outpost but is, as a direct result of this predatory business, a locality that has more in common with any inner city on the decline.

Libertarians and Republicans often thinks that if there is a market for it, all critique is forbidden because the market is always right.

Sometimes the market is wrong and preys on a weakness in the community and creates its own demand, while rending the ties that bind a community in charity, kindness, and mutual caring.

Hawaii and Pahoa are special in part because they don't resemble the places left behind.

This place recalls the very worst of what was left behind and diminishes Pahoa as a tourist destination, as a special place to live, and as a place that takes care of its own, even in hard times.

It may be the Pay Dy Loans is opening in Pahoa. Maybe not. I haven't heard anything about it anywhere other than uneedawish's original post. Does anyone know it's intended location?
Assume the best and ask questions.
