Hawaiian Quilt Commission?
#1
My wife and I are interested in commissioning a Hawaiian quilt to be made for our home. We have been scouring the web for potentials and have found some that we are interested in. We won't purchase products from China due to prior adverse health reactions to their loose quality control standards (think Florida drywall), and before we send our money to the Phillipines I really wanted to check with Punawebbers and hopefully interact and support the community we are aspiring to be a part of one day. We have asked the few freinds we have on The Big Island if they know anyone with experience and there were no leads that produced any results. Currently we live in an Airstream travel trailer and the bed is a non-standard size so we are not able to purchase a standard size quilt to meet our needs.

We are hoping to end up with a 90"x90" red (prewashed!) ulu on white quilt.

Here's examples of the designs we are thinking about...

We don't have large sums of money for the project but are willing to compensate fairly for the efforts involved. Are there any quilters on Punaweb? Do you know someone who takes on quilt commissions? Can you point us in their direction? Thanks in advance for any help provided!

There is a quilting store in Volcano who work with local traditional quilters, also one on the Bay Front in Hilo in the same block as the Kress building. These stores sell quilting supplies, the women who work there all quilt, and they also represent local quilters. Either place should be able to help you find a quilt maker. Some people prefer to piece the quilt tops, some prefer to top stitch the quilting patterns, and some do both, many quilts are done as collaborative efforts between several people. Pricing for quilts is on a matrix with machine sewn with widely spaced stitches at the cheap end, and all hand sewn and quilted with a zillion hand sewn tiny stitches per inch for the quilting at the most expensive end. You get what you pay for, but either way the quilt makers aren't getting paid much at all per hour. Good luck finding what you want.

The quilting shop on the Bay front is Fabric Impressions, 808-961-4468. There is another shop in Hilo on Manono st., but I haven't been to them yet, Kilauea Kreations, 961-1100.
