Are there any sportfishing charters on the Hilo side? Is it even worth it? Looking for Ono, Wahoo or Mahi Mahi or something like that. Eight more days.
Thanks

I had a student teacher this year whose Dad who takes people out on fishing charters out of Pohoiki, I have had the pleasure of eating ono and ahi from his boat. I'll email her and get his number and then email it on to you.

Many charters are out of Hilo (most out of Wailoa) but there are a number of fishers that just drop line - many areas around the harbor breakwater & along the Puna coastline have fairly deep water & there is a chance to hook some of the deeper water fish without going hours out on a boat... but that is a fun way to spend an afternoon! Heck, I have even had the pleasure of snorkeling with wahoo & ulua as my dive buddies right off of Richardsons' Ocean Park!
Always a good idea to know the NOAA nautical charts. Link for Hilo Bay: http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/19324.shtml Hawai`i Island: http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/19320.shtml

Go off Kaloli Point. Stick your line in the water. Tether yourself to a tree and go with a buddy. Or buddette. Drink liberally. Watch out for cicatura or some kinda poison thing the fish have. Find my bunny.

6 more days... then we can expect you at the July BBQ/ watersport/ beachday celebration that is called "Scuba Sunday" at Richardson Ocean Park... always held on the 1st Sunday of the month!
OH... and as you "Drink liberally", make sure that you hang onto your cooler, just in caase a rogue wave takes you for an off shore current tour....

What's going on in Hilo for 4th of July weekend? Scuba Sunday sounds great. I'm finally staying there long enough to do a whole weekend.

I looked and looked last year when I was there... Until I was distracted by the locked door slamming shut behind me in the dark and rain. I'll keep my eyes open this time. |
