Does anyone have experience of giving birth at Hilo or Waimea hospitals? I'm due next month and currently am seeing Dr. Nitta(any advice on him as well?) I haven't heard very many good things about Hilo hospital ex: encourage c-sections, don't really care about patients. I'm into a more natural birth experience but may have an epidural and it's my first birth so i don't want to have her at home in case something goes wrong. Any comments or advice would be great. Thanks.

www.bigislandchronicle.com had quite a few postings when she was going through this same thought process, I don't know how far back she archives though. Good luck finding what will work for you, and remember that some babies come quick, I know exactly where on the side of the road I would have had my 2nd baby if I had tried to make that drive.

We had our baby in Waimea fifteen months ago, but we had moved up here several months before due date. The quality of the hospital was a factor in our relocation.
Suggest you tour both facilities to get a feel.
If you are living in Puna, the drive time would be a big concern. If we lived in Pahoa area we wouldn't have made it in time. He was in a big hurry.
I will say we had a great experience at North Hawaii, fantastic staff.

Our baby girl was born in Waimea (North Hawaii Community Hospital) this past month. We made the trip from lower Puna when active labor began (better to go early and find a place to stay a few days before). This was our first child. We are grateful that we chose this facility (for our prenatal care & delivery). Our case ended up being a somewhat difficult one and everyone was very patient and skilled in what they did. We ended up with a natural birth and a very healthy baby. Anywhere else it would have been a cesarean without question.
