Kea'au Ace Hardware used to do this, but we've switched to doing it ourselves. Cost used to be on the order of $8 (2004-5). Don't know if Pahoa Hardware, now and Ace, is running the same service. You'd have to check with them. Used to take a couple of days to get it back. Whomever their contractor was did a good job, though.

Pauls Sharp All has done chain & circular saw sharpening for us in the past...
He was in Hilo, then in the Keaau Market Place, but no more...
He did most of his work in his home shop, so you may try calling (this is the last # we had: nine six one-nine six three nine

Harbor Freight has a tool that works very well. (http://www.harborfreight.com/electric-ch...93213.html) It's not all that well made and mine required some tweaking but it works great. You do have to remove the chain from the bar to sharpen it. I've used files with guides and dremel tools but this works the best and is fairly quick although the dremel type tools are quick too and are done while on the bar. If you look around you can usually find a coupon in a magazine for it making the price $29. I got my coupon from the American Rifleman. Of course if you just need one chain sharpened per year just take it to the shop.

I think Home Depot has a file and guide set, that's pretty cheep. Once you get the hang of it, sharpening a chain is easy, especially if you touch it up every couple tanks or so. Get extra files, they wear out faster than you'd think.

Oink, is there a HF on the Big Island? I never saw one but thought it would do REALLY WELL.

No HF stores in Hawaii, but they do ship here (and offer a few options) ...so....

And they just came out with a coupon for that tool for $20. So $20 plus shipping to Hawaii. I can give the code # off of the coupon if wanted.

Pondered this thread for an hour wondering if the need for this service would support a cottage industry. Then I deliberated how that would fit on top of my daily 5-hours of work around the property. The result was that I could surely sit on my butt sharpening a chain while the owner pulled weeds for an equivalent amount of time. With forty-seven years of hardcore experience, I could offer the guarantee their saw will be sharp enough to shave the whiskers off a gnat’s butt. They would need to provide the gnat and hold it steady while I did the shaving.
