Container rates
#1
Anyone have a ballpark guess for a 20 foot container from Oakland to Hilo? Just trying to figure out if it's closer to 2 thousand or 10 thousand.
Thanks

Good Advice. They can tell you, and I remember they had a list so you could total up stuff and then they send you the estimate.

For 2000 cubic ft it's about $7,900. However if you go over and add another 1000 c.f. they will charge you another $7,900.
2000 c.f. is about a 35' container ( approx. 8' high).
They biggest they will ship is a 45' ( 3000c.f). Ask for a high back which is just a tad taller than the normal, if you are trying to condence a lot of stuff.
The prices above include: they load and than deliver and unload, but you usually end up helping out on both ends.
I would stay away from Eden Rock moving services. I find them to be a bit on the slimy side and will b.s. you. I would never recommend them i.m.h.o. !
Remember you pay for cubic ft space, not weight.

We just shipped a 20 ft. container door to door from So. Oregon, which Matson then trucked up to Portland, then sent by rail to Seattle, then when it got to Hilo, they delivered it to Pahoa for $5200. It didn't matter whether we had it full or not, the rate was the same. I would imagine it would be pretty much the same from Oakland to Hilo.

Ours from Culver, OR to Mountain View Hawaii is $3500 (Well 4300 and some change... but still close enough to 35.)
Door to door, arrives 4 feet off the ground-- In other words the container stays ON the truck and you load it there in two hours. Overtime is 75 per hour.
Same at destination point. We're using Matson-- on a 20 ft container. Can placce up to 55,000 pounds in it if we need to for that price.

Hope that helps somewhat.

We paid $14K from Bay Area to HPP for 40-ft, and that included 1 day of wrapping all the furniture, 1 day of loading, and local delivery/unloading. We used what they call a "freight forward service" - they contract with Matson and movers here. We didn't have to do a thing except point and pay the bill. The people we dealt with were great. Unipack in Carlsbad was the contact, but distance didn't matter bc he contracted w/local companies - Contact was Pat Tworoger, (888) 252-0037 x 306; Pat.Tworoger@unipack.net - he can give you accurate estimate and arrange everything. We were happy w/everybody they contracted with. My understanding is that w/a freight forwarder, your stuff doesn't risk sitting on the dock w/daily fees. They get priority treatment. It's worth getting a quote from them. Very efficient. Very nice. NO worries.

Aloha Rocket Ed: Dunno your schedule or needs re: the move, but thought it worthwhile to note (as have others in past threads)that we (b)purchased(/b) our 20' from a yard in Oakland, had it delivered for $250 or so, and then had it sitting at ground level for as long as we needed to load it and prepare for our move.
We managed to fit the contents of a 1450 sq ft 3 bdr into the container by mapping the interior and creating templates for all fixed-space objects. We then created a packing scheme that made use of every inch of interior space with nothing left empty or unused.
We actually had room left at the front of the container when the lift truck showed up to transport it to Oakland harbor, so we had to quit loading.
Conan's brought it to the house and dropped it off and again we had all the time we needed to unload. When all was said and done, sold the container for what I paid for it (and could easily have gotten more) and the buyer paid to have it hauled away. Seaworthy certificated container = 1600, transport to/from house= 500,shipment to Hilo= 3115.74 (interesting that today's quote from Horizon Lines, our shipper, is 2530.09!!--would've thought it would be more, not less). Horizon was good, both car and household goods arrived in perfect order. ( 1-877-676-7447 is their number) So for us it totaled out to around 4k and again (and very important to us) had plenty of time to load and unload at ground level.
Best of luck on your move and welcome to this corner of Paradise...

I think you could have gotten more than $1,600 for a 20' container in good condition. Containers seem to go for a premium price here in the islands.
