Are you required to have a permit or some sort of health department approval to sell your home grown fruits and veggies in Hawaii?
Or is it as easy as just renting your space from the market and start selling?
Thanks

You might want to call or stop by the office or either the Maku'u market or Hilo Market (on market day) and ask one of the managers who work there.
Probably not a food handler permit for raw fruit but a few years back under Guv. Linda Lingle the state tax collectors started flying around to "neighbor" islands to make sure Honolululu was getting it's fair share. Not sure how they are enforcing things under the new guvernator, but I suspect they may want you to register as a tax collector for the State.

Depending on HOW you sell, you most likely will need a tax #....
My neighbor grow crops in our orchard that he sells or barters to sellers at the markets... (he also has other lots that he farms, but our orchard is close & grows stuff...

Speaking from experience...
No DoH permits required if you do not "prepare food", meaning you can sell raw produce -- just don't cook it or cut it.
Tax people can (and do) check that you have a GET license and keep track of your sales. They are especially vigilant about "cash transactions" such as a farmers' market.
If your lot is zoned ag (and most are), you are allowed to set up a roadside fruit stand and sell produce from your lot. You can also sell certain non-produce items that are branded with your logo, such as t-shirts and baseball caps.
If you want to register a "business name" with your GET, that function is handled by DCCA; they do not have a permanent presence on this island, but they visit the old bank building across from the County offices, so if you time it right, you can get both of these with one trip to town.
