Well, now that I will be officially ensconced in Eden Roc shortly, I thought I would give a shout out. Yay. Okay, so it is a small trailer, and it will seem very full with two of us, and three pets. When my house sells I will be able to build. The property is over grown, mostly by ferns, and I hacked until I found a gardenia. I have a plant list and will hack until I find as many as I can.
The pets are ready, so we are down to the final scheduling of flight and time to get the paperwork in. Also shipping the car. I feel like I am juggling a lot, but this is truly what we want to do. Hoping to have it all together by the end of March, first week in April. It has been a long two years.
I want to go to the first Scuba Sunday after I arrive!!!!! You will see us there!

Life goes on, with you or without you.
Peace and long life

[Smile] Aloha everyone, my husband and I will be retiring to the Puna District in two years. We look forward to getting on the plane from the mainland for the very last time and not looking back! We have been visiting Hawaii since 2006 and the Puna District grabbed our hearts from the very first stay. We are still going back and forth on whether to buy an existing home or build. We come from a small rural area in southern NM and are used to small town living. We currently have to drive over 65 miles to get to major restaurants and stores, healthcare, etc., so the drive to Hilo is nothing to us (even during the "rush hour"). We don't really want to buy yet because we will not be able to move until my husband retires in two years - thus the tossing around the idea of buying land and building.....we have followed the forum for several years and have read lots of great posts and gotten some good information. Hopefully in the next year we will have a plan whether to buy or build and start the next chapter of our journey!

Welcome to Punaweb! You are wise not to jump into any housing arrangements at this stage. Right now, it is possible to buy virtually new houses for less than it costs to build, but if you have a custom made "dream house" in mind or find the perfect piece of land, it could still make sense to build. A lot could change in the economic and social climate in two years, so see what develops and hold on to that dream. My partner and I are very glad we did.

Aloha, my name is Donna and I am from California. I moved to the islands 28 years ago and decided that this was home. I have three children who were all born in Hawaii. I work with special needs children and attend UHH. I have lived in Puna for the last 23 years and plan to stay here for the rest of my life!!

Aloha Neighbors,
My name is Steve and my wife Lissie and I moved to Puna in July of 2010.. Lissie is originally from St. Thomas V.I. and
I grew up in Santa Barbara county Calif.. I traveled a lot and was in telecommunications for a decade...We have been together
for almost 40yrs.. We lived in SW Florida for many yrs and built a business in Landscape Design and Horticulture..raised a family
and retired at 50.. We then lived in Northern Florida and then St Augustine til we up and moved to the big island.. We both love
animals, gardening, surfing when able.. We came to the Puna area because we had so many friends in St Auggie that had lived in
Hawaii and all of them said that Puna area would be the best for us.. We definitely agree with them.. So we landed with two carry
on bags and have been loving it here every since..I met a very nice lady today at the Buddhist Temple in Keauu who told me about this site.. So here i am, I also love photography, painting and being creative in any way that inspires me.. Am very interested in
growing more local fruit and farming in a sustainable way... Glad to be here, glad to be alive and look forward to new friendships made on Punatalk.....

Welcome Steve and Lissie. Be sure to jump in at a gathering..... Scuba Sunday is the first Sunday of every month, at Richardson's Beach Park. Although initially designed as a chance for fellow scuba divers to meet one another it has developed into a lovely Beach BBQ for divers and non-divers alike. We have a pot luck bbq, everyone brings their beach toys and we all share (except scuba gear, of course). There is always a kayak or two, boogie boards, SUP's..... we all have a good time. There are also the occasional Punaweb Parties. Again, open to everyone, we hope you will be able to join us and get to know the wonderful people of Punaweb!
