If a random event (thugs just looking for victims) that would worry me more to go down there again. If they were targeting a known supplier w/ a large stash I suppose that worries me less because I'll never be that person. Yes, I am approached many times going down there to buy "stuff" and many people typically assume I am into "stuff" even though I look pretty much like a nerd.
Its a real good argument to only take what you need to the beach (towel, flip flops, water, bare essentials) cause you just never know.
My recent trip down there, is the beach sand is now substainllly covered by rocks and not a very good boogie boarding area now and didn't seem to be the "in" place to hang out (at least for that week anyways).

Prescription Drugs are a motive, esp. in the late teens to early 20's age bracket. Hawaii county police have been educating educators on an increasing trend, as they have seen an increase in 'Pill Parties' (attendees all bring random prescription pills, combine them in a bowl & then take random pill combinations... usually based on dice roll)
And I did have a smile on the "bare essentials'" needed at Kehena.... then the sad reality that it is not as comfortable a place for many...
There is no mention of pot in the article. Poster #2 in this thread made that up or knows the victim who told him that it was marijuana. These punks who rob people will take anything they find on you. If the drugs turn out to be desirable to them (pot, percocet, ibuprofen, etc) they may keep it, sell it, or otherwise toss it. Same with the contents of his backpack. I find it interesting that 20 days went by before the story hit the police blotter and I checked their website too.

I heard somebody say the robber was a local thug named Eli? Some local with a buzz cut and tattoos down both forearms; they said he is an animal that targets anybody. Supposedly the old man took him down, but his cohort then blindsided the victim with a knee? Into his back...

Most of us who live down here would probably recognize these scum. They are probably the same guys who have been breaking into cars and homes for months. Some of them have been arrested, but even if they are convicted I'm sure they will be down here doing the same thing over and over again. The police would be overwhelmed with work if they even spent an afternoon there undercover. Not on the beach, but above it. You can count on being offered for sale pot and other drugs pretty routinely. On Sundays, scum from all over hang out in the parking lot and openly drink and use drugs for hours, intimidate people and intentionally stand in the street to block cars. Personally I'd like to see the police there every Sunday in the parking lot. These scum are not local residents who actually use the beach for recreation. We don't park there anymore and we never go there on Sunday past 11am. My partner was assaulted there a few years ago. I don't have any delusion that the police will ever do anything there. As it is it takes them an hour to show up when you call 911 and report that you witnessed a woman being pulled into a car screaming "let me go!" It takes about 12 minutes to drive here from Pahoa in a cop car that can exceed the speed limit.

It was a couple bottles of pills. NOT marijuana.
I have a contact. Victim older guy. Pot has no place in this discussion.
Obie made this up.

Gotta admit, when I read the victim older guy, I was thinking, yah, that guy is old....now I am reminded that guy is younger than me!!!
LOL - "old age" does have a way of creeping up on you when you least expect it! (and thanks guys for the reminder!)
