recommendations for opthamologist ?

Anyone have recommendations for an opthamologist in Hilo area? I haven't had my eyes examined in several years and need new contacts for sure. anyone happy with their eye doctor? My insurance doesn't cover opthamologist, so I will have to pay out of pocket.

Optometrist Caren Fernandez at the Ludwig Opthamalogy Center. They are reasonably priced and she does a very thorough exam. All the latest equipment. The center also has opthamologists on staff. With an optitian next door, it's incredibly convenient. One stop "shopping"!

You might want to look into AARP benefits. Basic membership includes discounts on glasses, but don't know about contacts. They also sell some health products for members in terms of insurance for dental, and they might have optical.

I've been to two for exams on this side, both fine. One is the guy in the Walmart building. Used to be accessed around the outside to left of main entrance. Am blankIng on name. Up to date equipment, thorough screening, Asian doctor.

The other was Hawaiian Eye Center, adjacent to the Hilo Bay Clinic in a kamaaina house behind it, IIRC. Does dispensing. I used Sears for my last pairs, but they closed their optical center on this island.

been using these folks for years - get my eyes checked locally (either here or mainland) and order online --- I keep a few spares around at these prices

- never had an issue glasses arrive in about a week

Dr. Perryman at Hawaiian Eye Center has been my opthamologist for years - excellent doctor. Only problem is he doesn't "do" contact lenses.

For that, I go to the Drs. Maeda (optometrists) on Kilauea Avenue, opposite the Hilo Shopping Center. They can do a complete examination. This year, for only the vision exam and prescribing contacts, I was charged $104.16.

As a diabetic with retinal pathology, I need to have the "full" treatment once a year, or I would probably go the Maedas for everything.

taropatch, thanks for updating me on Grant Miyahiro's new location. I was impressed with his eye exam.

I don't attach any importance to having the exam and ordering the contacts/glasses from the same provider. For an eye exam, I prefer to have an opthamologist over an optometrist.

Getting the end product -- that is just a prescription that an optician can handle. Go to the dispenser with the best prices and quality ratio, but maybe do some research online on types of contacts and pick the brains of whomever you deal with on what is best for your eye needs.

Ophthalmologist don't have to be paid very much.So,you can have your eyes examined.

Dr. Grant Miyashiro is an optometrist.
Dr. Caren Fernandez is also an optometrist.

Dr. Perryman is an opthamologist, but doesn't do contacts.

I don't really know if I need an opthamologist or if an optometrist is good enough.
Anyone have thoughts on this?
