Total Lunar Eclipse
#1
This event will be visible in Hawaii early Saturday morning. It may be possible to see both the sun and moon at the same time.
This clip 'splains it all...

Sounds amazing.
Last eclipse, the cloudy sky hid it all at my house, so I'm only tentatively excited. Unless I decide to head west for clearer skies. Hmm.

What do you guys think? Will weather cooperate?

Anyone know a good spot for clear sky and west view of the moon setting?? (without having to go kona)

You might consider driving up the Saddle Road to the summit turn off (around the 27-28 mile marker). The MK webcams suggest the cloud layer on the east side is low and suspect you might get a view up there above the clouds - Hilo can be seen from the summit so it ought to be clear. I can't guarantee anything and am not exactly sure where the moon sets or the sun rises from that point in the morning, but suspect that's your best bet.

It's only halfway to Kona...

Thanks Tom! Do you mean going up to Mauna Kea Visitor Station or just staying on Saddle Road would be high enough?

Am looking for a good star gazing spot not just for this lunar eclipse but also for all subsequent meteor showers. The past 2 meteor showers that occurred over the summer, I went up Mauna Kea VIS but it was toooo cold for me. I said no way I would be able to come back in the winter. So if anyone knows a good spot, please share Smile

I wonder if the view is good inside Volcano Park by the museum and how it is compared to MK VIS. But it's too cold up there for me as well.

I noticed that if I go to Kona through Saddle Road and right where Saddle Road ends (I think around Waimea??) the sky was always clear and full of stars. I think that would be a good place (though a tad far) but I didn't see any empty lot to pull into and I didnt want to just park on the side of the road to get rear ended.

Such a beautiful sight!

A star-studded night sky with Luna setting as the eclipse wanes and occasional wisps of low cloud drift across her face.

Amazing yes! that the clouds cleared to see it! Last time I saw a lunar eclipse was 80 or 81 in the Tacoma area. Cold and clear that night..... in the 20's! Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Had a great view of it from up here in Ka'ohe Homesteads! Lovely to have clear skies after all the rainy weather in the past month. Wish we'd gotten up about 15 minutes earlier, though... it was already coming back at a crescent.

At 4:00 a.m., I woke up and traveled all of 5 feet to the exterior bedroom door to view the eclipse. The night was very clear, but for some ghostly and wispy small clouds that created several brief false eclipses. The spirits were passing before the lunar light. Watching the moon get smudged was a profound experience. Below the moon was a constellation that formed a very large V like a flock of birds, or the head of a ram. Aries? I have an app called Pocket Universe on my iPhone which identifies constellations, but I was too stunned by the sight of the moon to put on my reading classes. These experiences are better shared. I gotta work on that!
