Introduce yourself
Aloha!

We are Jana & Kelly from Victoria BC. We've been lurking here a while but thought we should finally join in. Last year we bought a spaghetti lot in Orchidland. We are professional gardeners and also spent a few years growing certified organic vegetables for market, though now we've scaled back to only growing for home. Our main interests are in sustainable agriculture & horticulture but other interests include ethnobotany, hiking, music (we play bass, guitar and banjo), meditation, social-enviro justice, hot pond soaking…

We'll be there next week to begin our bushwhacking odyssey. In the long term we'd like to build a small cabin but in the meantime we are content to learn the lay of the land, do some "surveying", plant some food and medicinal plants and maybe make enough of a clearing for a camper. We have a TON of questions and will post a few soon.

Hope to meet some of you along the way. Thanks for the great resource!

Welcome to Puna, and our local resource as well. I hope that you enjoy visiting your lot and making it yours with some sweat (and a few tears).
We have friends in Oak Bay-- whereabouts are you?

My name is Marlene live in Alaska.
In the late 70's visited the islands many times always my secret dream was living in Hawaii.
In the middle of our cold winters I'd dream of the warm water, basking in the sun.
But life went on marriage & children & work took 1st place I'd forgotten my dream.
Until 2001 when our youngest won 2 RT tickets to Hawaii.
So I started "hatching" my plan!
We vacationed 5 star for two weeks in Kauai everyone fell in love!
So the next winter 2 weeks again in Kauai but this time the kid & I came home, Isent my DH & best buddy to the Big Island my plan was set!(Wink-wink)
Seven years ago we bought our land and the last six years DH has spent winters clearing, fighting red tape and building.
Last year the downs stairs was permitted for living.
My heart and soul is in pahoa.
Loved it in the 70's, now love it in my 50's
I've lived vicariously through my husband as he builds and becomes native 6 mo a year. This April will be the first time I'll get to see our home The last time being when it was newly bought and just a jungle.

Thanks everybody, @ David: We're from West Saanich, a rural area just north of Victoria. Mostly Douglas fir forest with some Gary Oak and Arbutus groves (I believe Californians call them Madronas...) We've visited Puna a few times now and love the landscape and laid back vibe. Looking forward to being there next week!

Aloha:

I'm Laurie and the love of my life (Denny) finally moved to Puna "Nanawale" after visiting the islands since "92".
We bought our home here in Nanwale Feb 2009 and love the development and our home.

We have visisted almost every isle since "92" and decided we liked the big isle the best. Love the Puna district although the rain can get pretty tiring at times, oh well better then snow.

Denny was born on Oahu "Tripler Army Hospital" me I am a Minnesota girl born and raised until hubby and I got married then we moved to North Idaho and still have a home there we spend our summers at to be with our kids and Grandchidren. We are finding though that we are extending our months/time her on the island longer and longer each year .. [Smile]

We purchased a fixer-upper and am glad to say we are almost done with repairs and upgrades. I think next year when we come back we will finish it up and then can really enjoy our time on the isle without lots of added work to do besides regular maintenance that goes along with home ownership.

Would love to meet and welcome new friends, Denny is a musician and loves to play music at the local open mic's and jam sessions. Me well I am not so talented per say, just like to hang out and enjoy life.

Aloha,
Laurie

I'm John. I lived and married in Kona in the early '70s. Got a job at Kona Cabinets and have been in the trade ever since. We moved to California as we started having children. Many trips back and 40 years later, our oldest son has been in Puna for several years now, and my wife, nani1970, has been in Kea'au since September. I remained here in Calif to tie up loose ends. Well now it's my time to return to the Isle we so love. Hurry up April !!!! I am a one time working, now hobby musician. I Administer an Independent Musicians web site. I love to build things and look foreword to becoming a viable member of a great community.

Hello...I'm Brian, and if things go as they seem to be going, I'll be moving to Puna in July of this year to start a teaching position at a local school. I'll be moving with my partner of ten years. We're excited and nervous...just made the decision that if I'm offered the contract we're going to make the leap of faith and take it. We'll be moving from a small town in North Georgia about an hour north of Atlanta...very excited to finally get completely away from any city of any sorts. I've been reading through Punaweb all weekend, its been informative, inspiring, and helpful. Its definitely increased my faith that we'll find warm and friendly people there (our biggest concern is moving somewhere where we know no one!) We're very excited to enjoy the water, the climate, and tropical gardening. Thanks for being there - hopefully we'll join you soon![Big Grin]

Aloha, Brian! My partner, Bear, and I moved to HPP from the Austell-Mableton area seven years ago and love it here. We used to hang out a lot around Dahlonega, Cartersville, and Cleveland, GA, and we occasionally admit to missing the Chattahoochie National Forest, especially Raven Cliffs. Punaweb is a great way to get to know folks here, and I hope your contract comes through. Use the search function on this site to learn about all kinds of things, and don't be afraid to ask questions. By following Punaweb, you will be better prepared than most newcomers.
