Moving to Puna?? Hawaiian beaches??
quote:
No need to "pay forward" the acrimony.
Agree. Let it pass out of your life.

Creating a "nuisance" on purpose to annoy neighbors would be a great way to land in more legal trouble too. Allowed use or not, there is a documented history of a feud, so it would not read as an innocent use of the land, but as deliberate payback, and there are actually civil laws that don't allow us to behave that way. Zoning isn't the last word on what we can and can't do.

Wishing you well, Jeff.

LOL sure, pig sty that'll fix it..

You can bet I've conjured multiple ideas of get-even tactics!!

However, what one does and imagines is a different story..

It's just not within me to attempt such nonsense. period.

Read over what I've written, I could have opened a TRO and taken his job in the process. I could have filed harassment charges in the mainland the 4th time they called, the lady screaming at my wife, said they'd sue me before they even met me. Following up with the same the as advised once I arrived for the 1st month of work..

This lady, and I'm telling you calling her a lady is being extremely patent and nice. Born and raised in Waianae, Oahu... , is just a nasty person. Who, in my opinion, lucked along, married a army fellow that other wise would be a relay decent guy.

A nasty, spiteful, greedy, lying Etc, Etc, , whom, on the day she'd told my wife she would poison our plants. Had it not been for the grandchild of their's on the patio, I'd of given her a real piece of my mind,, all niceness and Patience aside,, PERIOD!..

AND it would have been unfortunate for me at that time too, had I, lol,, because; little did I know,, she was just trying to set up a premise to call the police. Once she quickly grabbed the phone and,, for whatever reason beyond our imagination,, called em up.. She got charges of harassment filed against her that day as well,, and none against us.. nough said? laughing girl?

I could go on for days. How she used the other neighbor for her harassment agenda.. How or why I feel it was her, moreover the leader of this assult. Accidentally discovering as well, she worked at Wal-mart, and because of how she treated me there, professionally, I HAD HER JOB in my hands too!!

Yeah, there's always two sides to a story, and I strictly adhere to that. I also exercised more Patience with this couple than any normal, decent person should have to..

it wasn't a personality conflect either,, and moreover, 'exactly' a hoaly scenario. Although being one didn't help..

He had been harassing the owner who lives directly across the street. In my opinion edged on by the wife, for a few years before we came along, ..

When that owner offered to sell to them,, in fear of some type of liability,, which never existed, hello? Rats?? RATS?!! I called the county before I met them,, they said WHAT?? "IT'S JUNGLE!! Tell them go get rat poison" In 2004 or so,, she offered that lot to them for $8K, which they refused saying; it was only worth 4.. 2004?? In 2004 that was a $60-80,000 parcel.

The guy we bought it from, said,, she'd offered to sell at 8, and he GAVE here 16!! then he rough dozed it "grubbed", put it on the market for $69,000!!

Guess what? Then they turned their sites on him!! Who lives just 4 blocks away,, knocking on his door from time to time,, I don't know the whole story from that guy but I know this,, He told me to my face, around the last week we were there.. shortly after he bought it, BINGO, they are on his door step too!! Hello!!!

yup, there's two sides, I've investigated a majority of the history of their side prior to my owning it, during that last 4 month hitch. ..

Including,, on the other corner is a lady, who's been threatened by Mrs monster too. Psychically, who's scared to even look their way.

And they were given an opportunity to present their "side of the story" in judicial court.. With no witnesses, she was found guilty fined and reprimanded . ..

Of course I am bitter, my wife is bitter, I can't tell you how much problems it caused between us while we were there for the last four months.. And in all, we'd be lucky to say that we actually spent 3 weeks in that time on our property! each time they'd commit some action, and to avoid a HUGE problem,, we stayed away..

I'd taken about a year looking for a lot like this, My wife has minor emphysema, and it's very difficult to find good dry air in puna like this.. that is,, with water too..

We rented in, nanavalle, , upper mid Hawaiian beaches, and a few other locations, within the vacinity, all very wet, moldy, musty, mildew. But not there not in our location.

That small area,, is so much dryer,, ocean breeze, waves crashing on rocks, Tempature cooled on hot days by the off shore breeze. privet water. The clouds migrate up into puna and it's almost always clear skies at night and day,, OK except for the rainy season,, .. but over all,, much, much dryer! For what we could afford, that was it..

We sculpted the lot specially designed to suite the home planned.. It's like but very, very few in puna, not just for the lot design, but air, dryness, ocean view, volcano view,, those were some of the few times of us enjoying Hawaii,, when working on our land. sitting in our truck some nights, just enjoying the clean air, verses upper locations.. Which incidentally, he put a stop to that, once he told us,, one evening he heard us on the lot, grabbed his gun, siting they thought we were peeping toms.. AS IF!!

This property, while those people will never own it ,, It's the one vindication we can control. But,, it's literaly been stolen from us, thanks to "The other side of the story" .

It's ending as a very bitter experience for us,, never-mind the money lost,, when it comes to money,, ya either do well on a expence or not,, it's more of a moot issue, the money,, we would 'like' it back, lol but that's a hopeless thought..

sour memories of one heck of a very nasty lady hiding behind what would other wise be a pretty nice guy.. I've no question that she fueled him into the aggressive actions,,.. None..

Ive run across her type before having grown up in east LA, gangster territory, blacks, Mexicans, and other races. I've always had a personality conflict with her type,, as 99.99 percent of society normally does too..

I lived on Oahu in the 70's,, and know Waianae well enough that it's no place for hoalies, no different than east LA, a place for a Blondie too..
Additionally, the north lady,, the union between them against us?? While she's not the same type of person that guys wife is,, and I'm sure other wise would not have been very much trouble. I also spoke to her son,, quite a nice fellow, who, admits, that,, she's a bit rough,,.. Adding,, guess where she's from too?? Waianae..

Of course not all people in Waianae are evil, LOL.. I've been to a luau there with my old Philippine/Hawaiian/mixed race surfing buddy back then, in the 70's too.. However,, back then the locals I knew,, warned me to stay out of there without em.. And, while that was in the 1970's,, given these people are also near our age, I don't know Waianea currently,, but,, that was the rule then..
,, if ya want to find a population, distressed, troubled, uneducated, impoverished, packs and gangs, drugs etc.. Waianae on oahu is the place for you..

She, was given an opportunity to present their case in judicial court.. With no witnesses, was found guilty and fined..

The citations Stanley, the country inspector attempted to issue?? thanks to his foolishness that last day we were there,, both his supervisors reprimanded him, and all were dismissed..

Ive a few other satisfactions.. Because they haven't raised their kids where she grew up,, save that nasty personality, I doubt, due to his kinder nature, i doubt it will be spred as badly to their children, and further generations..

And that guy wont always live without regret. it stands to reason that, while they hired an attorney for defense?? Somebody admitted that she'd assaulted me.. Somebody tipped the coin, and I'll guarantee is wasn't her. He being the only witness, The county proceeded without our presence.. Somebody knew they were guilty, Without our pressence, no other outside witnesses. ? he's my pick..

Besides the bitter memories,, And like I said,, not just now, but while were we there, that's about all of the types of vindication I've ever understood.. Once I've attempted whatever i can conceive as a reasonable compromise: Avoid certain people and move on..

it does not mean I haven't thought of 50 different ways to leave your lover though!..

Thanks Kathy, for your advices then and now,, in retrospect, I did find a mediator, but,, Elected not to go that way. didn't fully understand that process for a few years after.. Your advise about it,, would have been the best direction to proceed.

Carre and Jim, Cathy and "hubby", Dave, Emorta,, ,

And those others who helped us along, good, and indifferent.,,,

We are now settled in S.W. Florida, in a recently developed, abet our house is one of the oldest here 1981, neighborhood,, mixed races, Cuban, Puerto Rican, , whites, blacks etc,, Older retired, younger with kids, and similar age range too. (I.E. I've never had personal racial issues with anybvody who's simply decent to others.) where all but one person in our whole neighborhood likes us, very well.. That one being; a fellow who had been racing down the street, ignoring the other neighbor's 2 year old's tendency to run into the street.. he and I had a small discussion about it, and threatened me,, I'm pretty sure the police talked him out of racing in the street too.. ..

Sorry for the ranting,, or not,, it's a very dificult memory along with the fact that: I'd always wanted to live on the big island, when my parents, uncles and aunts were debating themselves, in the early 1960's.. That Lot's location for the money, excludeing that lady,, is/was everything I'd hoped it could be.. Sigh..

Sorry for your troubles. Terrible experience to have. I doubt I would have been as nice as you.

Back in the early 70s I lived in Maili, just down the street from Waianae, while I was kitchen manager at the Fogcutter in Makaha. I never had any problem with the locals other than my car got burgled while at the beach once, and I'm just "assuming" it was a local. Could have been another hippie like me.

Jeff, I'm so sorry that the perfect lot for you was not to be and that you stand to lose so much money and time because of the neighbors. What a nightmare. Thanks for updating us. I wish you the best.

Puna on the Big Island is an ugly place. Hawaiian Beaches and surrounding areas the most so. PunaWeb is a dis-service to those who sell their all elsewhere and move over, starry eyed, as we did, and spend much of their life's savings and all of their dreams, to live and be happy in unparadise. It ain't there. You'll move back.

We tried, then tried some more. "Kill Haole Day" in public schools, "Born Here Not Flown Here" on t-shirts eveywhere we looked, "Go home haole" yelled at us from the Post Office to the beach. The finger. Our neighbors were pigs with everything from major family abuse against each other to big-time meth factories. And if the local police were aware of obvious illegal activity, they could not care less.

How many folks become dis-inchanted and move back to the Mainland? The answer is most. Why is that? Please save your money and find your place in the 48. Let the BI sink, without you, into the ocean where it belongs.

My experience doesn't match Brad's, so luck would seem to be on my side. Never saw any derogatory t-shirts, but then I wasn't looking for them. Never heard anyone shout "go home haole", but I wasn't listening for it either. And I got the finger a lot growing up in Chicago, but can't remember getting it here, although I'm sure I deserved it more than once. Oh, and our neighbors are great, too. So life is good.

We've indeed been lucky. And our results are not, as they say, typical. But it wasn't only luck. WE DID OUR HOMEWORK before moving here, including many trips, rentals, books and internet research. We made local friends before we made the move, and looked at every part of the island. When we decided to finally pull the trigger we had a good idea what we were getting into.

But Brad's right: there is indeed a dark side to paradise. The moral to Brad's story is to do your due diligence before moving here. Your neighbors, neighborhood, the people you associate with, and of course your mindset, really make or break the experience here. But isn't that true everywhere? Hawaii is definitely not for everyone. Some folks personalities just fit in better with other parts of the country, no shame in that at all.

Well, I was gonna start this with... I'll give you 10K for you lot! But then I thought why the hell would I do that? I don't need to live next to that *neighbors from hell*. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy! Sigh. But I once bought 6 acres in Orchidland, the mafia guy with the 1000 roster farm was on the other side of the street so I was safe! haha Even with the threats of if I catch your dog running around on my property I'll kill it. Yeah ok...

So, little did I know well, I knew but ... Didn't know that my next door neighbor was so loud with his weedeaters-Mower-tracter tune ups / backhoes / dump truck operation and sadly being down wind from him, he would bring in 20 yards of mulch to cook on his lot and you'd get not only hear it but smell it.

The worst part? He bought in LFA to all the lots. Sigh....

So, I bought .3 acre this time in yes you guessed it hawaiian beaches. Next to a vacant lot, that I might buy later if it ever goes up for sale. My other neighbor just built his home. I'm in the process still of building my home. But the street is cool. The neighbors seem very friendly for the most part. So hopefully I'll be really lucky. One thing Hawaiian beaches has all the utilities, no ccr's. I'm only building a 400 sq ft home anyway. So I'm really hoping .3 lot size's too small for someone to have a yard business with back ho's and dump trucks etc...etc...

Is it really too much to ask to just buy a slice of paradise have normal neighbors, to smell the clean trade wind air, and quiet (of course you can't rule out Cocui frogs) with out having to buy five 3 acre lots and berry yourself in the middle of them to get away from the crazy people?

I think I found the right neighbor hood this time. Smile Like PFish, I agree, I think everyone is as happy as they want to be. If you think your gonna run into trouble or have a bad experience (you might just manifest it.) So always hope for the best! You'll be amazed on what a little positive tude can do to not just you but everyone around you too!

Don't know how I missed all this, but I did....I read through all of it and it was like going to a movie...
I sometimes wonder how people rationalize their behavior, nothing is done without a thought of some kind. What were these people thinking? That they "own" the view? Frank Lloyd Wright said it best: "Don't buy a place for the view if you can't buy the view."
It seems everyone has a mean side - all it takes is the right situation to bring it out. If one is lucky, it never happens.
These neighbors can't remain the way they are, eventually they will rot from the inside out. Sometimes it takes awhile but they all self-destruct eventually.

yeah eight,, I have the same sentiment,, it goes around, eventualy..
And ultimately,, it is probably all about the view.. potentially 2-3..

Their lot will never see the ocean.. While mine already with partial view. , Down at the end of puna paka, there's 1 empty jungle lot, if its trees ever get cut,, it'll be wide open.. And,, currently,, their house sits above the neighborhood.. Once a house is on my lot, which is currently Elevated and leveled, just inches below theirs.

(Stanley, tried to make out, I improved above theirs and on the property line,, which hasn't gotten a new rock beside it since they Dozed theirs 20 years ago...)

they'll be cut off from that too.. (potential current 'Bully position')

within this neighborhood, at end center of puna paka, 3-4 blocks closer to ocean,, , 1 lot sees the ocean,,, otherwise,
There's only two other lots of the surrounding, 50 or so,, that can see it.,, and of those 3,, and a house on my lot.. one that's got the volcano too.

whereas, if they'd taken the lady's offer at $8k, what?

And Say,, Movie?? well heck,, there's no happy ending for the "Good guys" 'presumably us.. lol..

However,, Humm...,,?? yeah that's the ticket,, I'm callin Hollywood to sell the story!!..

Get enough change to just hire a contractor, build that house we designed,, and then call it good!!..

,, let's see now,, where'd I put my movie producer list??

Humm... [Big Grin]

I think what most people are forgetting is that you can substitute virtually any place name into this story and it could be just as true. I found a great home in NE Portland- 4 bedroom, huge lot, park nearby, etc for a bargain price. It wasn't until after I moved in that I learned I was literally living next door to a crack house. During my pre-rental visits must have been the only time his pit bulls weren't barking at full volume 24 hours a day.

It was unusual NOT to hear multiple gunshots of attempted or actual homicides every night. My house was cased every single day. I had to buy a huge rottweiler to discourage people from looking into my windows and through the mail slot in the front door. There was a high speed car chase that ended right in front of my house and the suspect ran into my back yard, chased by cops with their guns drawn. My ex wife (was wife then) was sleeping in the bedroom the cops were using the corner of the house as "cover". I had to wake her up and try to explain she needed to leave the room quietly and get down on the floor. Anything we left outside was immediately stolen. We even had our garbage stolen. We had to remove the hand-tightening thing from the outside water spigot to keep people from stealing our hose and sprinkler when we were watering the lawn (it wasn't worth stealing if you had to get all wet apparently).

That was just one place I lived. In one neighborhood I visited in Washington DC it was even worse. A lot worse. At the KFC you had to order through bullet proof glass. Your chicken was dispensed from a bullet proof turn stile. You had to go through a metal detector to get into the Safeway grocery store. One time we couldn't get to the store because there were 30-40 young men fighting in the parking lot, using broken beer bottles as weapons. The next day we tried to rent a Ryder truck (to get the hell out of that neighborhood) and we were stopped by the police due to an armed man with a hostage situation. Every window had bars on them. Every front door was reinforced with bars. Every business closed at dusk. You never, ever went outside alone at night. My friend was punched and robbed in the middle of the day with witnesses all around.

What were you saying is wrong with Puna?
