Fern Forest Vacation Estates

There are thieves here (and most other places for that matter), and they do befriend you in order to rip you off. And there are a lot of robberies. I suspect they are typically done by people who live in the subdivision and who have gained access in one way or another to people's homes, so they know what their victims have that they want, and they feel entitled to take it. And they'll smile and wave when they see you again. Thieves will just learn your patterns if you have them, wait for you to leave and come on in when you aren't home. Some roads are worse than others for that kind of thing. And yes, it's CRITICAL to know your neighbors and look out for one another. Goes for anywhere. We haven't had any problems in the 3 years we've lived here (knock-on-wood), but our neighbors at the opposite end of the street have had PLENTY. And a lot of other folks that live off a nearby road have too. We keep to ourselves except for our closest neighbors, and that has worked out just fine.

There were people living, yes, permanently living, at the community lot, making fires in the covered areas, taking apart their vehicles, leaving trash all over, lots of hungry dogs, etc. Not anymore. Thank goodness!!! And many huge thanks to the people who put their safety and energy on the line to put a stop to it. If people own lots here, let them have daily parties at their own lots. Feed their loose dogs there, do mechanical work there and leave their trash there. I suspect many of these people did not own property here, otherwise they would have used their own lots. If that's the case, they had no business taking over the community lot anyway.

Were all the people that were hanging out there thieves? No way! Were they all bad? Absolutely not likely! But they were a problem, because they were monopolizing the lot. A community lot needs to be kept open to everyone in that community, and if there is partying from 9am on, and a bit of a rough crowd that takes it over every single day, then that doesn't leave a lot of room for others to enjoy it on their own terms. I wouldn't have sent kids there, you just don't know what might happen when a big braddah's been sucking 'em up since 4 days previous... But we've been over all that in the Forest, the roofs and outbuildings came down, the squatters got out, the roads are looking better and better and things are moving in a positive direction.

BTW, I did get cantaloupe out here! That is, until the beetles got 'em. Sad

Well, I finally got back to Punatalk. I have been back and stayed at our lot and made an old bus liveable in a camping sort of way. After my son and I painted and made it homey and the bathroom functional, we left it and the next time we came back, it was still intact inside, but an iron stove left on the open end of the bus and another in a back cabin were stolen, but I was surprised after a few years that it was not broken into...and that would have been easy enough.
I think you nailed it Yurtgirl, that's what I heard too along with butchering pigs at the community center and trashing the area.
I just spent a month there and was surprised because I have never been there in the winter...wow, it rained almost every day from Thanksgiving til Xmas. So I got to see the worst, I think! I still love it and I believe FF is much better now and I can see it getting developed, so I bought another place which will be easier to fix up. Am hoping to be over about April or May. Trying to get things done here first. I did learn lots from my friend Pam! She is great and helped me immensely!
I would love to just get on a plane and come over now, but I can't! Soon I hope...

JeanH, I'm glad your attitude has been so positive. We looked at a lot of places here in upper Puna. We chose an acre in Eden Roc. I like the cooler climate here and thought more jungle to fight would be too much for us old folks. [Big Grin] Hope you can be here full time soon.

What do the residents think is up with this?

Jean H, yay for how things are coming along, in all ways! [Smile]

Umm.., local gossip? Before the dead body, the inhabitant of this particular home was described as involved with drugs. It was also my first look at crime scene tape, for real.

TMK 11099006 That property he was staying at for a few months now has a small matson container which has been "improved" with a small porch etc. There is the beginnings of a post and pier building just 60 or so feet back. The property has been substantially cleared of brush and trees and not much can be hidden.

It's not his, it's Ocho and Debbie's. Ugh!
For about a year and a half there was a comedic sign posted out front.
It said For Sale $75,000.

Johnny owns TMK 11095034, not a half a mile away. Although I can assure you that there was no "drug" traffic going in and out of the property, I cannot say the same for poor Johnny himself.

From a Time Magazine article: "Addicted; Why Do People Get Hook" Dopamine can be elevated by a hug, a kiss, a word of praise or a winning poker hand — as well as by the potent pleasures that come from drugs.

Pokerstars is mine and does chocolate Haagendazs count?

As was the other murder in Eden Roc, if in fact this was murder, it was most likely that of a crime of passion.

Sometimes we fall and no one is there to catch us.

RIP Johnny boy!

I read it was a gunshot to the head and strangulation.
