From Hawaii News Now on FB:

"Hawaii News Now: Authorities are still investigating. Hawaii Volcano Observatory says wasn't earthquake, National Weather Service says no thunderstorms so it wasn't rolling thunder, Puna Geothermal says it wasn't from them. We'll let you know when we hear more."

I heard it in Black Sand Beach Community and thought it sounded like a volcanic explosion. That's why I'm looking for info now.

For whatever it is worth: meth, or "Ice" as they call it here, labs can be highly explosive if the "cook" is using a recipe that calls for ether.

Yes, just watch a couple of episodes of Breaking Bad and you will learn all about those explosions! My friend in Leilani and a few others who live there said that it felt very close by and since USGS and the Park are not saying anything... it seems like it is not volcanic in nature. I asked a good friend of mine who is the public information officer at the park and she said she has not heard anything.

I lived in Oregon when it was the meth capitol of the universe. Trailers, barns, sheds, mobile homes and motel rooms all blew up on a regular basis. I was a weekend manager at a shelter for homeless families, we had the boyfriend of one of our clients blow up a unit (thankfully freestanding) 5 minutes after she sent the kids to go do the laundry, or else they all would have been hurt, instead of the lowlife boyfriend and the doormat neglectful mom. After working there I really came to hate that drug, and this was 26 years ago!

edited to add: I tried watching Breaking bad when it first came on, but I just couldn't deal with the Hollywood version of that reality. The movie Spun captures the world of meth cooks in a much more realistic way.
