Wow everyone, thanks for the warm welcome - its making me feel much better about what will be a very nerve-wracking move. I'm glad to know other people are from Georgia and are glad to be FROM Georgia but in Hawaii...I'm looking forward to being FROM Georgia, too. (:

I'm also big on gardening, and the best part about the move for me is exploring the options that tropical gardening is going to offer...if anyone is a gardener, I'd be happy to chat them up about that.

Also looking for nieghborhood suggestions, etc. All the usual.

Thanks again!

Tom the Astronomer who is really Brian, I lived in Cumming and Flowery Branch on the Lake for almost 10 years and then moved to Chicago for 15. You will love the gardening aspects here, but make sure you find a place with soil. Using a jack hammer to garden is a little hard on the back. If you don't raised beds are great too. We have deep soil but I have three raised beds for veggies on which I am harvesting tomatoes, corn and peppers right now.

Aloha au i Hawai`i,
devany

I am back! Punaweb tells me I last posted in 2009, so I better re-introduce myself and bring you up to date. I was living in Mongolia and bought lots in PBP and intended to build. But, then I got a job in Indonesia, and since I was living on a warm tropical island, the need for a home on another dimished somewhat. Anyway, since then I have lived in Afghnaistan and Kosovo, but now I am living in Honolulu and working for the State Legislature. I bought the existing (unpermitted) house behind my lots and I am a little over half way through renovating it and bringing it up to code. It is nice to be living in Hawai'i and I hope to spend a lot more time in Puna.

Aloha,
Rob L

Welcome back!

You are one get around kinda guy. I am having trouble drawing a practical line between Mongolia, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Kosovo and Honolulu.
Do you sell Amway?
Assume the best and ask questions.

Aloha! My name is Olivia and I moved to Puna in 2006 from Central California. Been coming to the islands 2-3 times a year since 1978 and finally decided "why am I doing this when I really love it here so much?" Packed ONE suitcase, left it all behind (and I mean everything - house/and all its stuff, job, family/friends), and started from scratch...best decision I've ever made in my life!!! Puna is as close to paradise as I can imagine: the beautiful ocean, the warm climate, the endless gardening, and the incredibly friendly people who inhabit this special place truly make it a community like no other.

I have been working on "Rule of Law" projects for the United States Agency for International Development. Bascially, I help foreign countries who ask for assistance to reform their court systems. (Now I work in the Hawaii House Justice Committee, go figure).

While this sounds promising, I somehow find it unlikely that the politicians in the Hawaii House will let you initiate any real reform of the mess that is the local judiciary. Good luck!

I've been living in Glenwood for 25+ years (grew up in Connecticut, went to college in Pennsylvania). I came here originally so I could farm full time (the ground is frozen solid in PA for months on end), but retired early 'cause of MS. Now, I have lots of fruit trees, a big garden, and a bunch of cats. And a kid who majored in Astronomy at UHH and works at the top Mauna Kea.
