USGS says over 60 quakes today...but only a few of these are listed on the quake site. I only knew the exact time 'cause I was sitting right here at the 'puter when it rattled through. I think Pele was snoring maybe.

It's interesting that 1) this seems to have been a very loud noise with an associated shockwave and 2) it wasn't picked up by USGS seismometers, or at least has not been reported as a seismological event. Seismometers do pick up vibrations due to ground-based explosions but perhaps if it was an explosion the general seismic noise meant it was below the detection level although I suspect that's unlikely. Sonic booms can also be picked up by seismometers but since the noise and shock wave are above the ground it's harder to detect them (sonic booms from a descending space shuttle, for instance, are detectable but very weak).
To me it does have the feeling of a sonic boom from something but if so I'm surprised no-one heard the aircraft if that's what caused it, especially if the shock was large enough to rattle windows! So how about a really whacky theory? A meteor/meteorite? (Suspect the real reason is going to be quite mundane if and when someone figures it out). Edit: just to be clear, I mean a sonic boom from a meteor or meteorite - it's not unknown but is certainly a rare occurrence. Tom http://apacificview.blogspot.com/

It made the news as the Top Story. Mystery Boom in Puna believed unrelated to quakes, but quakes were big news too, biggest swarm in six years and on the fault line known to have these swarms at intervals of several years.

The dynamite theory sounds quite plausible, though it seems like the USGS would have picked up the vibrations from whatever it was. My friend in Leilani (who lived in CA Quake area before) said the shaking was equal to at least a 5.0-6.0 quake. It also makes the most sense as far as explosions, and probably why nobody can ID the cause. However, "IF" indeed emergency vehicles were dispatched (as reported at the top of this thread), why is the county not making a statement to the public or press? My friend in Leilani also lived on Air Force bases and certainly knows the sound and feeling of sonic booms and insists that this was not like that, nor did she see or hear any planes. The mystery continues... and probably will forever be a mystery if they have not located the cause by now.

I think the use of dynamite to dig cesspools was made illegal about 20 years ago. I remember hearing dynamite explosions but they weren't as loud as the one yesterday. This reminds me of another mystery which occured in Hilo some years ago. A UFO was reportedly seen by many people. This was said to resemble a rocket or missle as it streaked across the sky near the airport. There was no explanation either from the military or civilian authorities. I found the article linked below. One witness said it was very loud so perhaps there is a connection.

It's got to be the military. If it's classified....we're never going to hear about it.

quote: Thats what my hubby said having worked right next to Mc Connell AFB in KS. He said it did not sound sonic boomish. His other guess was a Meth Lab out in the jungle somewhere with a diesel genny that blew. The video on 9 last night was of Seaview and the CD,FD, and HPD going down driveways there. If it was out in the jungle it might be a long driveway they didnt go down in the Seaview/Leilani/Black Sands triangle but he did think the fallacy in his theory is no one saw any smoke. The other theory I heard was .... (grain of salt needed).... someone dropped dynamite into the steam vents to close them off on Hwy 130 and it rumbled down through the tubes. Plausible as any other theory I guess. But this is Puna, the real reason and 100 other rumors will surface eventually... LOL

My snowbird neighbor Hans has a theory. Since civil unions are legal and Hawaii needs new tourism ideas:
Virgin Galactic was conducting a sales pitch to Ku'ulei Kosmos, a possible franchisee, and demonstrated the Hawaii C378 model. Being 1/100th the size of the actual spaceship, they could only send a feral pig into the troposphere and predicts someone will be having a bbq pork festival in Guam tonight. |
