Why is the concept of a speed limit so hard for some people to grasp?

Lynn. definitely be ready to go to court, start drafting a letter to the judge, read it & have it proof read by as many people as you can, and most importantly, follow Kelenas' advice, both in public (like this forum) and at court, you have the right to be proven guilty.

However, it is best now also to work out a back-up plan if the the worst happens (and you should have a plan anyway, as your car could stop working on the same week that all of the rental cars on island are checked out - yup, that has happened! - there are also many other reasons why you may not be able to drive but can still do your work...) 30 days is not horrendous, you may have to hire someone (maybe a neighbor) to drive you, you may have to see if you can work out some combination of public transport &/or carpooling (there are also vanpool systems that you may be able to use...)

No matter what, it is good to have alternative plans here on island... as you cannot count on every thing working out as originally planned, all of the time!

And good luck on all of this, as I truly do hope this is all a lesson that is not detrimental to you or your life!

Other speed trap area - coming from Hilo side towards Waimea between Tex's and the last turn off to Honokaa.

Also Waimea between where Hale Kea was (Next to Anna's Ranch) and the turn off to Kohala by HPA.

You would have to look at your ticket to see which code violation is listed, but one of them states something about NOT travelling at a speed faster than what is "prudent and reasonable". Now if you are on a straight road with NO traffic or hazards, you might be able to employ this as your reasoning. Not sure about 80 mph though but is at least worth a try. My husband used this many years ago ang got off allthough he was only going about 20 mph over limit, it was late at night and no other vehicles were on the road. At the very least I would say, expensive lesson learned?

Tell the judge that the traffic behind you was traveling faster and you were attempting to place a "safe distance" between you and them.

AFAIK, If you get a lawyer, that means the county has to send an attorney because an officer isn't allowed to go up against counsel. Usually their first tactic is to try and get you to plea bargain to a lesser ticket. So as long as you are OK with a regular speeding ticket, you probably have nothing to worry about. For now, you are innocent.

If you are on the verge of loosing your license due to too many points better have a lawyer that is good at traffic type offenses and follow their advice for sure. Don't leave it up to chance. Not showing up to court will make things even worse.

Also everyone watch the stretch of road heading north of Hilo for about 15 miles cause it doesn't actually allow 55 mph until later on. Police love to set up a speed trap there w/ multiple squad cars. I got stopped for going 60 in a 45 mile per hour zone and was real polite and said I wasn't aware of my speed and got let off w/ a warning probably my Colorado license said I wasn't worth a ticket. Then I got back on the road and went the speed limit and felt like I was moving like a turtle So short story to that, watch all posted speed limit signs and pay attention!!!!
