remember to check if the places you are looking at have running water (city water) because a lot of places are on water catchment and you have to haul in drinking water. some places don't have electric, cable, internet or paved roads. some places don't catch cell phone service. take all of this into consideration. i have lived in Puna for 23 years and would not live any where else!! I love it here!!

Rent for at least a year. We were there five years and moved back to the Mainland. For some people it works out fine, for others like me, not so much. I was miserable there after the first year. Two boys? They won't be treated well in some of the schools. Think this through very carefully - the moves over and back cost us about $20,000.00.

I don't think 20K will cut it for many people who bought or built.
Most will end up owing the bank except for those with money who paid cash.

Not a reference to money lost on real estate. The $20,000 was expenses incurred in the actual moves. We profited from the sale of our home but it was the result of a five year slab-up remodel.

Can I fog for them? Here in MN they are like 50 times worse than what we found in the Puna woods. We found that the fogger will keep out 4 acres mosquito free for a couple of days and they will slowly come back. Best 50.00 I have spent in yrs.

Sorry to hear you had to spend that much on the moves. Are you going to be happier on the mainland?

It might be the best $50.00 you spent but whats in the fogger? Some people may not want chemicals sprayed because of children or plants that the fogger would harm. Do you have any natural way to fog for mosquitoes?

I think our moves costs were pretty average given the amount of "stuff" we relocated. Two full size rigs, a Harley, container crammed to the roof, three dogs, and one-way airfares.

And yes, thanks, I'm much, much happier on the mainland. I would have been better off in many ways to have skipped the whole living in Hawaii life, and kept the experience to an occasional vacation there. And I think that, in a nutshell, was the problem - vacations ain't life.
