name of spiral twisted palm tree
#1
I would like to locate a source to purchase a twisted spiral palm tree. I looked for the name of this palm or a picture on internet and it is not screw palm or screw pine.
These palms do look like a screw though. They are very tight leaved and in a circular spiral.

I need the name of it so I can go looking for a source
There is one half way down Paradise Ala Kai on the mauka side that is huge. I have also seen a couple on Red Road near Kalapana.

If anyone knows the name of this please let me know.

Are you sure what you are looking for is actually a palm? Many plants are call palm this or palm that, but are not really part of the palm family.

Call Jeff over at Floribunda Palms. He might know what you are looking for and if anyone has one, it would be him.

When I first saw what appeared to be a spiral palm, I later found out that it was a younger lauhala tree. they seem to start out in a spiral.

Have you tried google images? Once in a while I get lucky when I am trying to find out what something is. You know, try palms of Hawaii. Etc.

Not sure what is twisted, the trunk (which can happen to many taller slender trunk palms, like the queen) or the leaves twisting up the trunk (kinda like a pandamas, but with palm leaves) If so may be: Syagrus coronata, but there are others (I remember my grandpa had a grey leaved 'nassua palm' with the leaf cuts made a great spiral stair, have no idea what the species was...)

www.palmtalk.org is a great resource if you have a picture or more info, along with the palm society here on island.

Deborah, If you haven't already figured it out I may be able to help. I'm a board member of the International Palm Society (which hosts palmtalk.org; nice to see a link here!) and also propagate palms on a smaller uppity microbrewery kind of scale... If you want to email me a photo I'd be happy to try to identify it for you... william@piouspalms.com

Deborah,
i think i know the tree you're talking about. It is the coolest palm tree i've ever seen and i'm actually getting one tomorrow. A friend is moving and i'm getting it from her. Go to flicker.com and put in 'spiral palm tree', there is a picture posted by a 'freemanus'.

Most likely a Hala Tree (Pandanus tectorius), called a Pandanas to other parts of the world. NOT a palm tree. The Hala tree is now known to be indigenous to Hawaii, was previously thought to be a "canoe plant" (Polynesian Intro).
Young Hala trees spiral off the ground, and older trees branch unlike 99.9% of all palms). There is also a variegated form with less of the thorns along edges of leaves. Leaves were used for plaiting mats.

save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha
