mosquito control options
#1
Anybody have suggestions for quickly supressing a nasty mosquito problem? I understand the concepts of removing ponding water etc but a place we are thinking of buying has so many hungry aggressive mosquitoes I'm ready to consider chemicals at least at first to get things manageable.

Setting up your own small pond or tub with mosquito fish in it will actually reduce the population in an ongoing way. The mosquitoes lay their larvae in the water, the fish eat the larvae, and the population drops. It wouldn't be hard to try, all you need is a trash can full of water and some mosquito fish.

I know just the spot! There's a hot tub full of dirt with beautiful tiles. I bet I could get that going good enough with an external pump to keep some mosquio fish!

This site has more information about using mosquito fish to control mosquitoes, and by extension, mosquito born diseases.

Our pond is loaded, you are welcome to as many mosquito fish as you want they also multiply fast!
Also keep plants and heavy foliage away from the house and the gutters clean, as mosquitoes can breed anywhere.
Agree with becsolar, ducks are great at all pest control[Smile]

At our home we bought six Muscovy duck chicks 5$ each, organic feed, 20-40 per month or what you can afford. Three ducks were male and we sold two. Now we have three female ducks and one male. We have very few mosquitoes in a place where they were swarming in full sun three months ago. Also we have eggs on a regular basis. Great pets with very little needs. The ducks will forage if not given feed and just lay less eggs.
Best pest control money can buy. The thing I like of the ducks is they scout out all and any standing water and filter it through with no larva left behind. The ducks have knocked back the mosquitoes 95% or more. No poison for our yard is a plus. They do not mind not having shelter. The only time they are in the small pen is when we feed them there otherwise they live outdoors.
Negatives are:
they will eat any and all plant matter so gardens and small plants need to be protected.
They will poop everywhere they can go. Fertilizer. The water hose does a good job for cleaning much of it.
Aloha.

I must be missing something here.

How do ducks get rid on mosquitoes? I am picturing them either swallowing up puddles and standing water, or snapping at mosquitoes. Both mental pictures are a little mind boggling and have overtones of fairy tales.
