Welcome! I came from Baker City, OR (we considered it more Idaho than Oregon because of the 6month winters..lol). I've been here 6 months now and still enjoy this beautiful island. Gardening is no longer 12 weeks a year! No vitamin D deficiency here
I still am getting used to bugs, creepy bugs but that will pass. There are libraries of advice on Punaweb as to where to buy property on this forum. Take time and read all the info! Best of luck shopping and an early welcome from me!

Bduvall and everyone - Welcome!
I love Puna and have been on the Big Island 22 yrs. I know its not for everyone. As for the bugs, yup, but by comparison, no snakes!
My brother and SIL are doing the same thing - he has worked for a city government for 30 years and is retiring in -4 yrs. He is doing the pacific crest trail hike (LOL) and then are moving here.
I never would have imagined it of those two! But turns out one of their SIL's-to-be worked in Kona for quite awhile, and is ready to come back so solves some of the far-away family problem. My mom and dad moved here 14 yrs ago.

Aloha everyone,
I just moved here last month (I'm in Nanawale) from Oahu. I love where I live, but it's been tough meeting people! Looking forward to talking with you all more. I think I lurk most in the gardening forum as that is what I am into lately. See you around!

We found Uncle Roberts and the night farmers market in Kalapana when trying to et on the right road to lava viewing area. It looked like the place to be. Happiness and Aloha everywhere, wish we could have stayed or made it back to the market. BUT, we WILL!!!
Hey all I have been following Punaweb and posting for a few months now. Hubby & I hope to move to the Big Island in the near future. Puna area is where we stayed and based our Hawaiian experiences from. We loved it and loved the people
It seemed more down to earth, real, and full of fun loving interesting characters than anywhere I have ever been!

Puna is the best place to be! We planned our trip from Arizona for almost a year, and this site was the most accurate, useful info we found. Now that we are actually here, we see that all the good things are even better than we hoped! Friendly folks, wonderful weather, easy living....we have found our Happy Place! Aloha, ALL!

If you don't know about it or haven't tried it, go to Uncle Robert's Awa bar and night time farmer's market on Wed. in Kalapana. There is a lot of magic with a night time farmer's market and there is some incredibly good and cheap produce there (just make sure to wash it all in soapy water and rinse before eating). There is a food court with some really good food for reasonable prices. Free local island music starting around 5pm with some incredible talent. Then there is the bar. Awa is slightly narcotic and fills those who drink it with aloha spirit. This leads to talking with anybody about everything. It is family friendly, different areas for the kids to play. Get there early though, while the band is tuning up because it gets jammed after 5pm, and you will have to park down the road (make sure and carry a small flashlight).
Aloha pahoated!
Thanks for the info! That sounds great! I'll definitely be checking that out this week! Mahalo!

Puna is nirvana ;D
Nirvana is an ancient Sanskrit term used within Indian religions to describe the profound peace of mind that is acquired with liberation. In sramanic thought, it is the state of being free from suffering. In Hindu philosophy, it is union with the Supreme being. The word literally means "blown out" (as in a candle) and refers, in the Buddhist context, to the imperturbable stillness of mind after the fires of greed, hatred, and delusion have been finally extinguished.
This nirvana description from Wikipedia is on the target of how we felt while in Puna! Yes I know we were on vacation, had stars in our eyes and all that other non positive yada, yada... ;D BUT - if the shoe fits wear it! In this case being PUNA, I want to wrap myself in you and soak up liberation!

Wow, all kinds of newbies to the BI! I am still a newbie of 6 months
.
Shave ice, I am in Nanawale. Started attending a local church the first weekend I moved here and I have become a member of a huge family of wonderful people. A bunch of us have "ladies-night-out" in Hilo every other Friday...lol. There are church members who like to hike, fish and snorkel/surf.
I also paid attention to needs of people and now take people to Hilo with me when I go shopping and I even help feed a couple of horses and clean out a barn a couple times a week.
The point I am trying to make is there are so many different avenues you can choose to make new friends. I find I have enjoyed the volunteer thing.
I almost forgot one more thing. The VFW has a breakfast every other Sunday open to the public and it is located in our very own Nanawale. Another great place to mingle
Take goodies to neighbors and accept them where they are. Just pour out Aloha and you will be busy with new friends!

I love this! The more I learn about the area the more I see that I am making the right choice for me! Thanks You! [
