Paul, This week they started flying around 5am. We are in Downtown Keaau, and they COAST GUARD chopper was doing grids all through our residential area for almost an hour, then there was a break. After the break there were 2 grid flying choppers....this went on for OVER 7 HOURS on wednesday... not a few minutes.. of course averaged over a month, & not including the tour helicopters flying higher doing their minute every 90 minutes most every day..... yah, it adds up.... I
F THE GRID FLYING was for an emergency, then YES, they should be there.... but if it was for green harvest??? I really doubt that starting a seven hours grid flight at 5am was an emergency... it was annoying....AND the grid flying in our neighborhood was right over the residential area, totally visible houselots from the road...
BTW, at UHH we have used remote sensing images for years that pinpoint plant types...the images we have are first utilized by the feds....you can tell most anything you want about the plants growing everywhere on island from those images, down to the height & type of plant....so they are not 'looking for the pot', with the imaging they have, they can pinpoint it down to a meter...so if the grid flying is for that, it is a waste of our tax money....
But most of the time those tourist choppers are higher & the noise is not so much, when the COAST GUARD chopper is flying low (can even SEE the pilots face) even our DEAF dog gets vibrated & most of the neighbor dogs are frantic... oh, & we do live near a elder respite house that has fairly frequent ambulance/fire truck response - nowhere near the annoyance level of the grid flying....
