What do you want to know? Shores is the shore side of Hawaiian Beaches, separated by Kahakai. Shores tends to have newer homes than Beaches side and Beaches started out with a lot of tract homes. There is an association and they require dogs to be chained but everybody has one or more dogs and they get into bark offs, especially if people are walking by. The atmosphere is so laid back, lots of people walking feeling safe, keeping watch on the traffic. There are always some crazies mixed with average folk.

One thing to remember is don't bring mainland expectations to the BI regarding roads and development layouts, just adapt, be happy. Kahakai is essentially the only road into Beaches and Shore. It is a busy road and it must be noisy for the houses along its length. Your scooter or moped idea should be just fine if you aren't thinking of daily hauls to Hilo or something. There appears to be what looks like good metro bus transit all the way down Beaches, never tried it. You almost need something like a scooter or moped for the Puna triangle (much like the Bermuda triangle except on land). It will also be good for most of the Beach road although the real thing for that is an ATV. Both Malama and Island Naturals grocery stores in Pahoa are high quality. Some prices are sky high but with careful shopping, a grocery bill shouldn't end up a lot more than the mainland. In some areas of Shores, the houses are so close together, it is possible to hear multiple household conversations, especially in the evening. I have two rooms with air conditioning that are almost silent, even to coqui, if the doors and windows are closed, so neighbor and dog noise isn't any problem.

The really odd way that subdivision is laid out is very confusing, because it is actually 4 different long skinny subdivisions running from the top down to the ocean, with Kahakai running down the middle. They are Hawaiian Beaches, Hawaiian Parks, Hawaiian Shores, and Hawaiian Shores Recreation Estates. When you cross over into the one which has CC&Rs you can tell because they painted a line on the streets. So you can live in one subdivision with rules about things like chickens while right next door to you on the other side of an invisible (or painted) line your neighbor can have no rules at all. You also have many dead end streets where the first half is one subdivision and the second half is another. It looks like the original developer put in the roads and then sold off development rights to 4 different entities, thus 4 subdivisions with very different rules side by side in very close proximity.

That was something agent John Dirgo pointed out to me when I was looking: The difference as you cross over from one (Beaches) to another (HSRE)is quite noticeable. There is an argument to be made for CCR's.

I have no expectations for the island. I'm coming as I am free of the world I will be leaving behind. I am a world traveler and have always had a lot of respect for the places I have lived. This will be a new beginning for me. I turn 40 the day after I get there. If anything I hope to bring my good heart and ability to see the beauty around me and capture it in my paintings. Life is a adventure and that's what this trip is all about. Peace! [

Let me guess. You are busier than an air conditioner salesman in Arizona but spend catatonic hours staring off into the horizon. Those last few weeks were crazy for me, even with extensive planning. There were some hellish nights clearing out of 3 houses during some of the worst NW winter storms in years, all the while looking west to paradise. There's a lot of weird stuff here, in every aspect, but it is exceeding my dreams and what I knew. It was my dream for many years and now I am living the dream. Have a good trip.
