e-waste disposal/recycling
#1
I learned that my microwave that died did not meet the requirements for the transfer station appliance disposal. They are considered electronic or e-waste. Hawaii County does e-waste collection one day a month at Hilo. I found an alternative. Convenient local electronic device recycling collection centers

Hilo:
Mr. K's Recycle & Redemption
815 Kino‘ole St.
969-1222
Daily 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Accepting TVs & monitors, computers, printers, phones, DVD players/VCRs, microwaves and other small electronic devices - FREE!

It was easy, drive in/up and they took the bugga off my hands, done deal, drive away. Thank you Mr. K's!

Where do I get rid of 5 old rusted out chest freezers that were illegally dumped about 5 years ago?

From County of Hawaii Department of Environmental Management's website:

Appliances or white goods can be recycled at the scrap metal area at the following locations:

Kealakehe Recycling Point & Transfer Station
Hilo Recycling Point & Transfer Station
P#257;hoa Recycling Point & Transfer Station (white goods only - dishwashers, stoves/ovens, refrigerators, washing machines & dryers) - Open during Transfer Station operating hours. No Commercial appliances allowed.

Open daily from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

For commercial/industrial refrigerators/freezers/HVACs, the refrigerant must be removed prior to disposal. Contact a refrigeration service company for refrigerant removal service and documentation. Documentation of refrigerant removal must be presented to the Scrap Metal personnel before they will accept the item(s).

For more information call 961-8942.
