This may be the oldest known surfing photo, taken in 1887.

The picture shows king Kalakaua of Hawaii (1836-1891, at the right, seated, in white coat and hat) during a visit in Honolulu of John Stiles Dickerson (1828-1904, American yachtsman who won the America’s cup in 1876).

Wow. Every picture tells a story. Here are a group of newcomers on the beach covering 99% of their skin and a few Hawaiians who, I would imagine, are bewildered about the new world order.
