Coffee for gift.

I would like to 'show off' our coffee but don't know how to.

Humbly asking for advice on what to buy and where.

Recipient has no idea its coming so no need worry about personal preference.

Hilo farmers' market is a good place to look for stuff from some of the smaller farms. My parents also like Shark's coffee a lot, both Kona and Hilo-grown (not sure what their actual sources are, presumably they buy from various farmers), and it's less expensive than some of the others. Somewhat surprisingly, Long's in Hilo has quite a selection of local coffees (they also sell the 10% blends and ground coffee though, so be careful in what you pick out).

We have often sent coffee as a gift, and it has always been well received. Right now our favorite coffee gift is the awesome product by Big Island Roasters in Hawaiian Acres.

Kona coffee has a name recognition that is hard to beat, but the BI Coffee Roaster coffee taste has been phenomenal... and it is a Puna product... some of our gift recipients also like Sharkys, Shark or Hilo Coffee mill products...

I personally like Kau coffee best. It just doesn't have the name recognition that Kona coffee does yet. Can't remember the name, but Kau coffee is sold at the Makuu farmer's market in a red bag.

OK Farms in Hilo has real good coffee at real good price if you go up to the farm and buy it.

Hawaii Coffee Assoc. just had their state-wide cupping competition. Out of over 80 entries, Hilo Coffee Mill placed 5th in the creative division. (We tied for 16th)

We grow it in our backyard. Process it ourselves...and then buy 4oz coffee bags at the Hilo Coffee Mill and send them out to friends and family.

Be PunaProud...I like Sharkys (not the confused with Shark's which certain others swear by). It is grown in Puna, is slightly less expensive than Kona or Ka'u and has a pleasant, distinct flavor. The only thing I don't like about it is the packaging which is kinda basic and not very "Hawaiian" (it is sold in stores at a higher price with better branding). The guy that sells it just the nicest guy. I pick it up directly from him right in Hilo.

For cool branding and packaging that instantly tells the recipient where the coffee is from check out huladaddy.com I don't buy their coffee but I am hoping that someone will raid their online gift shop for me, wrap it up and give the stuff to me for Christmas. There is something very camp about what they have done there.
