A pair of Nene
#1
Ok so we have finally made it here to lower HPP. Yippee after being absent for a few years, so nice to be back.

First night, a pair of Nene (unbanded) greeted us with calls and neck bobbing just outside the fence on the lava, stayed about an hour till dark and left. Yesterday they loudly announced their return about 10 am landing on the deck inside the fence. Stayed ALL day even taking a brief swim in the pool, which I understand from research they rarely swim. At one point they even entered the gate to our lanai to take a nap in the shade. Think they got too hot in the sun.

Wonder what tomorrow will bring in the continuing saga of the nene? I have a feeling they will be back! I think they like it here. [:I]

They are back! My son said they were here at 7 am when he got up, but no announcement of their arrival, they came in quietly, allowing is to sleep in. At 9 am when the rest of us had still not awakened they began their call. "time to get up friends and greet us" After a morning neck bobbing and cute nene calls the male now stands by the pool on one leg and his mate sits all the way down preening and cooing ( or making whatever sounds she makes, DO geese coo?)

I wonder what the day will bring in this most awesome place?

Iju, that IS where we are staying Beach Rd at Ala Heiau. Yes they are certainly beautiful and very gentile. I think they have quite obviously had contact with humans before, as they are not he least bit bothered by our presence and even seem to like us.

I saw a couple near Shipman beach a couple years back, never heard of them in HPP, cool Smile
Wild Nene are naturally not scared of humans (or cars, dogs, etc.), thats the problem. Nene have been evolving here in Hawaii for 500,000 years and have only seen humans for 1,500 of them.
PS. I saw 6 of them on Thur in the Volcano Park, 2 were unbanded

save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

Skydawg, Not sure they COULD be jewish at that [:I] either way they're beautiful!
Actually the pool man told us this morning this pair has been here along Beach road for a while. They left after we headed out around 10 am for the painted church, nd the Kalapana Village Cafe and were not here when we returned about 4 pm. I am sure they will be back in the morning. Updates to follow. If you search on flicker for "Mikakai" and or "nene". My hubs posted a picture and a short video of the pair.

Saw the same pair (??) again this evening. But this time it was by the shore at the South end side of Maku'u. It seems they were hanging around for hand-out food from the people who were fishing down there.
