Chasing Lava
#1
There is a local who is swimming with lava to get unbelievable close up lava-hitting-ocean photographs. These are a couple of his comments (slideshow at the link):

quote:
They tread water that’s 110 degrees. Just 20 feet away, the water is boiling, Kale says. “We have a lot of fun, but it’s extremely dangerous,” he says. They have not escaped without injuries.

The photographers manage to capture stark, scary images of molten lava against crashing waves. “Not many people die each year, but when they do it's normally in large groups when large chunks of land drop into the sea,” Kale says.

Chasing lava

Photographers Nick Selway and CJ Kale spend their days in hot water – sometimes, nearly boiling – just to capture dramatic images of molten lava oozing into the ocean off Hawaii.

It has been months since the lava was last hitting water here.

Don't ever believe anything featured in London's "Daily Mail"!

It was just a news item from yahoo news, not sure what the london mail has to do with it. No doubt, it is probably a promo for the photographers' coffee table book. It looks like one of their photos is the one on the phone book. Lava hasn't been hitting the water for months but there were a couple breakouts recently (the hot spot is moving into the East Rift zone). And the Royal Gardens helicopter landing approvals seem to be going through. It's all about the lava chasing.

What's going on with the volcano

We are in the East Rift:
http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/activity/kilaueastatus.php
Hazard Summary: East rift vents and flow field - near-vent areas could erupt or collapse without warning with spatter and/or ash being wafted within the gas plume; potentially-lethal concentrations of sulfur dioxide gas may be present within 1 km downwind of vent areas. All recently active lava flows are within Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, adjacent State land managed by the Department of Land and Natural Resources, and private property within the Royal Gardens subdivision; the lava flows do not pose a hazard to any structures not already within the County-declared mandatory evacuation zone. Kilauea Crater - ash and Pele's hair can be carried several kilometers downwind; potentially-lethal concentrations of sulfur dioxide can be present within 1 km downwind.
