Home Remedies

I was wondering if anybody has discovered or been helped by any simple home remedies.

I have been bothered by a Virulent virus and/or bacteria infection to differing degrees since about May. Symtoms have included severe sinusitis, cough, sore/itchy throat, asthma, and low fever. The symptoms would vary and they would move from place to place with different severity.

Finally last week I got fed up and decided to call the doctor (I don't have insurance but please don't make this a thread about medical insurance - thanks). The doctor I called couldn't see me until October 15 - nearly 3 weeks from the time I called. I thought to myself what's another 3 weeks when I have already had it on and off for nearly 5 months?

Anyway I got onto Google and started to hunt around for home cures and came across a site extolling the virtues of apple cider vinegar as a cure for several bodily ailments including all of the symptoms I was suffering with.

The site made a point of emphasizing that the apple cider vinegar (ACV) needed to be: natural, undistilled, organic, raw and non-pasteurized. I went to Safeway and found ACV but it was distilled, and pasteurized. I went to the Pahoa Health Food store and found the real article.

I have been taking 2 teaspoons of ACV along with 2 teaspoons of honey in a cup of hot water 4 times a day since last Friday and all of my symptoms have really improved / some have disappeaerd completely. In the past whenever I got these things I could never shake it till I went to the doctor and got antibiotics. I can't believe this works so well. I am not completely over the problem but have enjoyed a huge improvement. I will keep it up for a couple of weeks and see what the results are.

There are several Internet sites that discuss ACV but the one I used was:

http://www.lacetoleather.com/wonderdrug.html

I know this sounds like a snake oil pitch but my purpose is simply to share this knowledge with somebody who might be helped by it and to ask if anybody has had any similar experiences with ACV or any other home remedies.

Aloha,
Andrew

ps: A doctors visit along with all the prescribed medicines would probably have run me several hundred bucks. The jug of ACV cost 5 bucks and change. Go figure.

Actually Andrew someone told me to use cider vinegar on my monsterra rash (after I had been treated by various doctors for 2 years and had every sticks and twigs rememdy imaginable) so i was like "yah whatever" - it seemed to work the best. I used it on a cotton ball twice a day.

I do 1oz ACV every day. Not hot but with water and some dollops of honey. I also try to do a lime or lemon daily. I use one of those old style glass hand juicers and then add a packet of splenda and water. In your case I also strongly suggest peppers. Eat lunch or dinner at cat's house daily(assuming she learned how) and eat plenty of pinco de gyo ( no idea at all how to spell that) or other concoctions of hot peppers. I am a chronic sufferer of symptoms like you describe but I stay with drastically reduced symptoms by following that regime. If I would give up my daily cigar I would probably have no symptoms. But, nah!

Not exactly the same kind of home remedy you're searching for, but I swear by the information in "Healing With Whole Foods"...heal yourself faster with your food choices. My acupuncturist recommended it to me and I have since passed it on to 4 people, one of them to help him through the physical rigors of chemotherapy.

It tells you what foods to eat & what to avoid when you have specific illness, body type, symptoms or health goals. It's written from the standpoint of eastern medicine, but you can still understand most of the book if you don't know anything about EM.

We yanked it out for every complaint at KapohoCat's full house & now she has a copy too! The cheapest place to find it is on Amazon.

My new favorite 'garden remedy' is rubbing Hibiscus flowers on stings, rashes, etc. Works great!

When we get eaten up at dusk by the 'squitos, vinegar takes the itch out for sure! And the smell dissipates pretty fast - not like you smell like a salad for hours.

I've had the worst eczema on my right hand for years. I work as a waitress and constantly handle lemons and dirty plates. I've tried so many ointments and remedies that I can't even count. Every time I went to the doctor I asked for something to relieve the peeling and itchiness. The only thing that has worked for me is a tablespoon of Bragg's Apple Cider Organic Vinegar which I picked up from the health food store. I drink it every miorning first thing when I wake up with a big glass of water. I was a die hard coffee drinker and couldn't even move without my 2 cups of coffee. It makes me feel better and more up when I get up in the morning, I won't go a day without it. I'll still drink my coffee later on but I don't feel so desperate when I first get up in the morning and the best thing is my hands look totally normal after years of peeling painful itchy hands. So as you can tell I'm a total fan of ACV.

How do you apply the saline to your sinus? Do you make your own saline solution or buy it at the store? If you make your own how do you apply it?

Kapohocat:

It is amazing how many different uses there is for the stuff. In your case the acid in the vinegar must have neutralized the toxin causing the rash.

Oink:

Do you do the lime/lemon for the vitamin C or for other reasons?

My friends gave me a Hawaiian pepper bush that is currently loaded with red peppers but they are blazing hot - makes jalapeno peppers seem mild in comparison. Sometime I need to try to make Hawaiian chili water - I've heard it's good.

Man I wished I had known about ACV earlier in my life because I could have avoided a world of suffering.

Hooligal:

I was interested in starting a thread about any and all home remedies people have come across.

I know that diet plays a crucial part in general health and well being. This is something that most doctors avoid for some strange reason.

The book you mentioned "Healing With Whole Foods" I wonder if it is to be found at the Hilo Library - Do you know the name of the author by any chance?

Carolann:

Got any recommendations to keep mosquitoes away without getting bit in the first place. I use deet spray but I'm sure that stuff can't be good for you.

Stringbucket

Another ACV testimony. Awesome!! I am beginning to believe that the stuff is truly amazing.

I saw the Bragg's Apple Cider Organic Vinegar at the Puna Health Food store as well but opted for "Spectrum" brand. It was a larger container for less money than the Bragg's brand.

I have had minor eczema around the heels of each foot that have itched and driven me crazy off and on for years. The more you scratch the more you itch kind. I thought that it was starting to clear up as well since the ACV but wasn't sure. Your story convinces my that here is another great side effect from the stuff. COOL.

Question for anyone that has used ACV for any extended period of time:

Has anyone had problems with their teeth? One thing that some websites said was that the acid from the vinegar could damage the enamel of people's teeth. Other websites said that that isn't the case with the undistilled, organic, raw and non-pasteurized variety.

Aloha,
Andrew

I drink every morning a big glass of water with 1 TBSP of ACV with a straw. I heard somewhere that otherwise the vinegar can do some damage to your teeth's enamel.

You can't go wrong with plenty of water and Vitamin C.

Not knockin home remedies but I noticed I feel alot better by simply making sure I drink enough water to feel better everyday.
When I don't I can tell.

I like to try and get vitamin C in everyday too.

Perhaps I will try this ACV just for the heck of it.
