Don’t anybody be sorry for Ken!
I would have thought that if a "real" reporter had done their job, the actions of this grossly inept Clerk as well as the arrogance, ignorance and stupidity of the Chairman would have been front page HTH and WHT stories every day. It was not, and Tiffany was one of the few "reporters" to report on this debacle. Yes, Tiffany generally does not tolerate the negatives, such as the little school yard bully mentality of Rob's three word snipes, Damon’s consistent banter of “I’m better than you,” and Obie's general Troll postings, and yes Tiffany has pushed a lot of her opinion in the matter where it does become hard to separate the reporting from the commentary, but for me - I agree! I am really pissed off at all of this. This Clerk makes damn near 100 grand a year - and she SHOULD HAVE AND COULD HAVE done this correctly. If there was really anything to have ever been done in the first place. Which, as far as I am concerned, there was nothing out of line being done. Perhaps it may have been a grey area, but long term, stellar performance records and all of a sudden The Clerk smells all this wrongdoing and trouble??? And what was then plan then??? Nothing. Just nothing of substance. What is really appalling are the actions this Clerk and the Chairman have done thru this entire mess. When the Chairman and Clerk begin to yell at Corporation Council, Corporation Council has fools for clients. But then there are some who just love to beat up the messenger and let the message just go on! And for the future, this County’s elected representative and its appointed representatives need to decide if we are a “Union Shop” or “Merit Shop.” You can’t be “double breasted!” Learn to manage people and Union Contracts.

Ken, Shooting from the hip and not researching the facts are not hallmarks of good reporting. Tiffany has not been willing to examine details. She has engaged in supporting a predetermined position. Fine is that is what she wants to do but other news sources are wiser.
Tiffany is quite capable of dishing out 1,000 words of criticism but is apparently unable to handle three words of criticism herself. In short, she can dish it out but she can't take it. I am not the only one noticing. Ultimately she can do as she likes, and so can I. I prefer to examine all sides of the primary problems. Rush to judgements does not serve the community or Tiffany either as a point of fact. There appears to be a lot of blame to go around. One scapegoat just lets other perpetrators off the hook. If the County Clerk is removed, and she will be, the others who directly and physically caused the primary election problems will remain in place. Confidence in the Election Office will not be a result. I think the council has been wise to wait and let processes take their course and not make premature conslusions. Is it really your preference to not fully examine the problem and assign blame to all those who played various roles?
Assume the best and ask questions.

quote: I completely would agree with this statement. 1) Just looking from the outside, I can see how this mess may have gone wrong now. Jamae possibly did not have the people skills to do the "rah rah rah good for the county lets all pull together as a team" speech, and keep the election process cohesive after the firings. 2) I can also see where Tiffani was originally trying to do some investigative reporting but that has gone slightly astray because of her involvement in the denial of press access story. And if Jamae was press savy, she would have met with Tiffani and used Tiffani to get her spin message out. But she choose not to do so.

Rob,
Ironically, this entire issue has nothing to do with Tiffany! It has to do with Human Resource Management – pure and simple. At the hands of the County Clerk and the Council Chairman. We did not elect Dominic Yagong on a platform of reforming Hawaii County’s Civil Service Unions. Our Council did not appoint Jamae Kawauchi to reform Civil Service Unions. The Clerk and the Chairman found what they thought were offenses that deserved termination. They never looked at each specific employee’s files – ignored the years of commended service EACH of the 4 workers had. Never discussed the 4 workers with past County Clerks. Hired some obvious sham investigation company that either let information from the investigation get leaked into the media, or the Clerk and/or Chairman leaked it intentionally. Then, thru due process of the Civil Service Unions as well as the law, 3 of the 4 terminations were overturned and the positions ORDERED reinstated. The Clerk and/or Chairman have refused to reinstate 2 of the 4 workers, as the third left island and the fourth passed away. The only thing this Clerk and the Chairman have explained in the termination of the four workers for alleged wrongdoing. “Drinking on the Job and sign making.” They never explained any action that has occurred, on their watch, at their feet since. Just “no comment.” To the people, the press and the State. Nor did they have any form of a recovery plan or go forward plan – just fire these 4 workers. Speaking of drinking on the job, where are we at with the THREE TIME DUI arrested, but never charged cop? He as far as I can see, as of this moment has not been “terminated.” Wonder why that is?? Now, again, if these 4 workers clearly took part in terminating offenses, there are procedures in place and this could have been affected WITHOUT the fallout that took place. You asked me this question: “Is it really your preference to not fully examine the problem and assign blame to all those who played various roles?” I toss that question back to the Clerk and the Chairman with respect to the decision made on that fateful day to terminate the 4 workers. Further, you stated with respect to Tiffany – the following: “Shooting from the hip and not researching the facts are not hallmarks of good reporting.” That may be true. But more importantly, how is that any different from what the Clerk and the Chairman did to the four terminated election workers? They shot from the hip. They never researched County policy, Union Contract Language, nor discussed the situation with past people in the same positions. They used the age old egotistical management style of “my way or the highway.” Now, notwithstanding this entire issue is that, yes our Civil Service Unions need overhaul. Here is an opinion piece from back in 2011 discussing this issue. http://www.staradvertiser.com/editorials...=119553514 You just do not accomplish that here in Hawaii (or really any other place) the way Dom and the Clerk tried. We can make this about what reporter said and did what, or we can make it what it really was and is – that the Clerk and the Chairman tried to grab a tiger by the tail and got bit and clawed awfully bad. Because they shot from the hip. They never researched the employment histories. Again, when the elected Chairman and the appointed degreed lawyer Clerk begin to yell at Corporation Council, there is a problem. And that problem is that the Corporation Council has fools for clients. PS Ford also yelled at Corp Council too! PSPS In a few weeks, we may have a new President. But about 98% of the people who run the government will be the same. Will we have this new found “confidence” all of a sudden? Will millions of unemployed be employed and will there be peace in the Middle East on November 7th? I doubt it! |
