Just a reminder...Plant-it Hawaii's semi annual retail sale is November 2nd and 3rd from 8am till 4pm. And remember they don't take debit or credit cards. Cash or check only. Im hoping to get a few dwarf tangors along with a few exotics like Abiu, nutmeg,coffee and brazilan cherry.

John Mood, the tree guy told a bunch of us people while we were touring his 40 acre orchard that Plant It Hawaii has the worst root stock trees ever. i believe him as i was stupid enough to buy from Plant it, and the trees that come from there look sickly and haven't been growing very well as opposed to trees i started from seeds.
yah and i feel ripped off paying soooo much for the little trees from there. never again.

So where do we buy good root stock plants then? Plant it Hawaii supplies most of the plant stores on the Big Island!

It's not so much where do you buy as what kind of plant do you buy.
You want a plant/tree grafted onto something that has a tap root. Only trees/plants grown from seed have tap roots. If you take a cutting without grafting it onto another plant/tree that was started from a seed and has a tap root, then you will easily see the difference between a tree/plant with a tap root. i suppose contact john mood,he is in ninole and he is a long time tree grower. his 40 acre lot had some magnificent trees laden with fruit of all sorts.

Some of them might have been what some people would call "small" when they were purchased, but they didn't stay that way for long. If one has a problem with a P I H tree, make sure its not the individual grower's problem. It takes a lot more than just digging a hole to successfully grow a fruit tree.

My memory of John's comment was that it referred solely to citrus. The point was that PIH brings in citrus rootstocks from the mainland that are not the best ones for Hawaii. If that is the case (I do not know where PIH sources its rootstock), that is a valid point, as different areas need different rootstocks for best performance and Hawaii is very different from anywhere on the mainland.

I bought 3 banana trees from planit hawaii put them in the ground and first day new leaves area already sprouted by 4"!!! Pretty good results if you ask me. Not bad for 6 bucks!
