Best Place to rent a house in Puna?

Recently purchased a 1 acre lot w/ a small house in Eden Roc on a paved road, just down the street from the fire station and park. Bought it sight unseen except for having a neighbor take pictures for me. paid 7,500 so i couldn't pass it up. Anything good or bad to say about Eden Roc? Any of the other subdivisions better or worse? Currently in Arizona with a couple years left to getting my first pension, and looking forward to moving someday....

We are looking at vacationing on the big island for a couple of weeks in June and renting a house. Where is the best place to rent near or on the ocean? Been looking at Kapoho.... Any suggestions and info would be great...

There are some great local places on vrbo...check for Mika Kai, Mika Alua, Mika Mizu...etc. I clean for them and they are great employers! Good luck!

VRBO.com, and this Forum is searchable, something I didn't figure out for awhile, so a lot of stuff has been answered already. This is a fantastic place to learn, we are moving to Puna from Iowa soon, there are all kinds of questions I got answered. Is electric available to your lot already? Just being nosy, as usual.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

Hey Rick,

Yes electric is available, when we bought the lot we found that the SSPP had not been paid in full so there is a 3k balance that has to be paid before they will turn power back on to the lot. My understanding is that they brought power into the subdivision and split the cost the lot owners. Helco doesn't charge interest so we will pay it off a little at a time....

I've been looking at VRBO and was looking for some advise on the best place to stay, from what i can tell Kapoho seems to be the best.... Didn't know if anyone had an inside scoop?

$7500 is a good price. Didn't know they were going for that little money these days.

Eden Roc has a bit of a rep. As with most reps there is a kernel of truth which is wildly exaggerated. It is one of the less exclusive subdivisions with no covenants or restrictions. You see a mix of a few nice houses and some real junk yards. Would I buy there if I had wealth and unlimited options? No, but you got a heck of a deal. I am curious now which property it is. I can't imagine that the "house" is anything you would want to move your family into right away, not for only $7500. Are you closer to Ohia Street or Palainui? I guess I should say I'm on Ahi St myself.

I'll ask my hubby to post about the place we stayed at when we first moved here. Stayed two nights and really really loved it. It was in volcano village.

We own a home in OrchidLand Estates and LOVE it! If you can find a rental here (I think a couple punawebbers have rentals here in OL) it's not that close to the beach (ie a little cooler) but not that far away. I love it here.

Hi John,

Kapoho is a fine place to stay during your visit. It is, in many ways, quite the opposite of Eden Roc (e.g. ratio of sunshine to rain, proximity to ocean, etc.).
For what it's worth, it takes a special kind of person to live in Eden Roc long term. For one reason or another, the majority of people find that it's not for them. At the price you've paid, it sounds like a good investment (for as is resale)...however you might take a long hard look before investing any significant amount of money in the place.

When we bought our place here Mark rented it out to vacationers for a year or so until we moved here. We also rented from them when here on vacation. You can see the places for rent on the website. Mark does a great job and is a pro.

Granettranch, I'd say your dead on with a Kapoho vacation rental I've looked all over the island numerous times for myself and family coming to visit and it appears that Kapoho has the cheapest prices if you want to be right on the ocean. Sea view estates had some real competitive rentals as well. If its just you and your wife I stayed at a place in seaview that was only $75 a night but it was a single bedroom affair.
