Kona Brewing beer isn't made in Hawaii!
#1
I recently found out that the Kona brewing company makes almost all their beer on the mainland. They only brew tiny amounts on Hawaii to satisfy the facade that they are a Hawaiian company. 100% of their beer sold here available in bottles is made on the mainland, and most of the beer in kegs is too.

Due to pressure from Maui Brewing Company which is 100% Hawaiian (including manufacture of the cans they are sold in) Kona Brewing has begrudgingly agreed to list on the label (not yet released) some of the other locations where their beer is made on the mainland, though neglecting to mention that none of the beer in the bottle is EVER made in Hawaii.

I find it ironic that they are claiming to be a "Kona" company when Kona farmers have fought so many legal battles to maintain that Kona coffee is grown in the district, yet a mainland company that is hijacking the Kona name for beer production does it without any consequences.

Thanks for the info, will pass it along ... Nothing special about that beer anyway IMO.

Mehana Brewery brews their beer in Hilo ...and you can get re-use growlers & keggers & such, so even more eco-friendly (best yet, Monday growlers & their sampling prices!)

Not sure if any brewery here is totally island sustainable at the present (not sure - but think that beer here has always relied on importation of ingredients - does/has anyone grown hops.barley & such on the islands?

As an ardent supporter of Mehana - yeaaaaaa

As for local, a friend of mine in Pepeekeo tried going hops, but gave up, said we didn't have enough hours of sun per day as I recall.

I have no problem with importing ingredients etc; but falsely claiming that it's a "Hawaiian" product when NONE of it comes from Hawaii and is a 100% mainland product... seems like a big fat lie to me!

I don't care about names as long as it tastes good.If you own a company
you can name your product whatever. Who cares -competitors?

It's brewed in Newport Oregon, by Rogue Ales. Great tour of the plant if you ever get over that way. Beautiful area of the Oregon coast.

Have toured both island breweries. In their tour, Kona Brewery does state that they do not do all of their brewing in Kona, and they have reasons (shipping costs, land costs, material costs to name a few).

They do brew in Kona, mostly formulating & microbrew batching, and the specialty brews that are offered at the restaurant are locally brewed.

So like Kona coffee, hula skirts, flower/shell lei, lauhala mats & other 'Hawaiian' items, it is buyer be aware... much is not made here, and if it is, probably has a higher cost... but it is nice that some of it is made here, and some do not have a higher cost...and Mehana's is well worth the time to visit!
