Have used Clivus Multrum & Centrex units in cabins up north....both were higher end residential units & the Centrex was on a low flow head, so pretty standard residential look...neither unit needed much, the Centrex was a semi annual cleanout & the composter was mounted away from the main portion of the house, much like an ash bin.... so even emptying that was not dirty job... Have used low flow carousel units in Australia & Norway, but never had to do the maintenance...so....
The front unload units that are mainly sold here would not be practical in many house layouts, as you would have to schlep scoop & bucket through the house...even for an outside use, you are kneeling in front of the throne to access the compost door...not my fav. activity...& as we get older, less & less of a thrill!
Course in my backpacking & caving days, a bucket & sawdust were luxury items... & the first NP solar composting toilet I visited was out of this world - soo superior to a latrine!
